Watchmen

I was Thinking of getting the Ultimate Cut, Is it Worth it. I read that it is 3 hours and 25 minutes long and the normal one is 2 hours and 40 minutes! Should I get the Ultimate or Normal?

Definitely worth it. I have never watched the normal version of Watchmen, nor could I due to how acquainted I am with the ultimate cut.

Have you read the graphic novel yet? If not, I am going to warn you that Watchmen is not a movie that is based off action sequences, nor is it exactly a super-hero movie. It is a lot more in depth, and carries a far more stronger message. Chances are you will watch it several times if you are into deep storylines and meanings. If you are looking for a brief, testosterone filled clip-show that is forgettable though, this is not that movie.

I have it on Blu Ray but I think it's just the extended release or something. It was worth watching once, but if I want to watch it again I think I'd go with the regular release. Time is too precious to spend 3 hours watching one movie.

I have the Ultimate Cut of the movie. I've gotta be honest though. I've never ever watched the movie all the way through.

I know a guy who holds that Dr. Manhattan is actually not real, and everyone is just having a group hallucination.

Anyone that has read the novel will know how relevant that is.

It's not my theory. He can't explain it, but he still believes it.

Ahh, faith. Intentionally lying to yourself to paint a world where you think you are in control.

Well, if it's a mass hallucination, then the Vietnamese had it too and believed that they were getting vaped by a giant blue dude.

Dr. Manhattan was much more believable in the graphic novel than the movie. Somehow a big, neon-glowing, naked blue guy just doesn't translate to the screen very well, imo. But I did like the film a lot - I actually saw it before reading the graphic novel.

The version of the film I saw was longer than theatrical, but definitely not 3.5 hours. So....I shall have to check out this disc. Does it have more scenes of Rorschach in it? He's the one in the film that I liked the most.

The movie tries way to much to be a film of a graphic novel, than a movie based on a graphic novel.
It is very in your face with it's: Look how we replicated everything exactly as it was drawn..

No that it is a bad movie... but something work better on paper than they do when you actually see them.
Also the movie does miss part of what the novel was about, by making some scenes (Zacks uber slomo use) übercool..

On a sidenote (wont spoil) the ending works better as it was filmed.. (and yes I know that is controversial)

I hate Dr. Manhattan. I just hate him. I read Watchmen in the first place because I resent omnipotent, and thus incredibly dull heroes who can just blast their way through everything. And of course what Manhattan does at the end of the story only reinforced my resentment.

My old drinking buddy from across the pond made me see Watchmen I was surprised how awesome I thought it is. It was nice seeing a lot of 'hero's' that were just regular vigilantes for the most part (excluding Manhatten and Ozy).

I heard a while back there is suppose to be a sequel of some sort to Watchmen even though Alan Moore didn't want it to happen.
Spoiler
I don't see how a sequal would work it seemed like the entire point of Watchmen was that the more powerful a person was the more they were deprived of ethics and morality

Also the movie does miss part of what the novel was about, by making some scenes (Zacks uber slomo use) übercool..
Yeah super slow motion is gotta be my second pet peeve about action movies I hate it slightly less than when a director uses and jumps between like 5 different camera angles so you can't see whats going on besides a few punches thrown here and there so you can only get the impression that some sort of donnybrook is going on.

Has anyone watched both the theatrical cut and the ultimate cut? What has been added?

Just re-read the graphic novel a few weeks ago. I love the movie, I don't get all the hate for it. Veidt was good but miscast (the actor that plays him is just a terribly creepy-looking dude, which kind of telegraphed the twist). Laurie was the opposite - the actress had the right look but is a bad actress. On the other hand though, Rorschach and Dan are pretty damn perfect. Dan could have been less fit, but that's a very small quibble. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach is actually one of my favourite performances of all time. I actually prefer what happened in the end of the movie to the book, the squid thing was silly, and the movie changing it to Dr. Manhattan made perfect sense.

Exactly the point Alan Moore wanted to make imho. An omnipotent superhero is basically a deity and therefore would not have any interest in puny human affairs.. (or at least that's Moore's take on it and comments indirectly at that other hero at DC)

Unless the omnipotent being found humans to be cute and amusing, like pets, and at the least wouldn't want us to completely annihilate ourselves.
But yeah...I doubt they'd care much about anything outside of that one thing, even so. That's why they do things like make Superman or Greek gods etc. fall in love with a human. Emotional investment.
