Its just the same as in Bambi when his mother gets killed by the hunter or in the Lion King when Simbas dad gets killed by the buffalo. Just with a little bit more detail.

I remember reading that one pretty young. I'm pretty sure I saw the movie because some of those scenes seem really familiar. I don't think I'm traumatized for life.

Watership Down! Not A Watership Down. It's a placename, not a ship.

And while it isn't for small children, I read the book as a teenager and thoroughly enjoyed it. I still have it, and occasionally reread it.

The movie isn't nearly as good, but it is decent. Teenagers can watch it, no problem. I would not recommend it for younger kids. Partly because it's disturbing at places, and partly they would not be able to follow the story anyway.
