You take turns trying to deal damage(points) against the other team. Getting to first base is like hitting but not doing enough damage because the enemy has resistance to your attack, while getting to second is just doing a regular amount of damage, and getting to third means your attack is super effective. Home runs are critical hits.
You have a party(your team), but you only have one guy attacking at one time, while the rest wait their turn. The others who are on the bench(the camp) come into play later if your original line gets out(knocked out).
Every once in a while a pitcher(boss) might throw several cheap shots at your party from which they can't recover from knocking them out.
If your party does manage to land a hit, but not a OHKO then they have the deal with the annoying fodder support boss characters the creators decided would be a good idea to include just so they could piss you off. Just when you think you're about to land that final hit they come out of nowhere and somehow manage to knock your character out.
Once all that's said and done you return to your locker-room(the town) to restock and rest(at an inn) and listen to your coach give some (cheesy half baked ideological) speech right as you are leaving to play(fight) another game(boss).
