Weather, day and night?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:28 pm

Note: I hope this hasn't been said in any interviews yet or that I missed a topic while searching. If that's the case, feel free to close this thread.

I was wondering if there would be random weather and a day and night system in place. If not, I hope it will get in.
I know that weather effects can reduce vision, however I think this will add a dynamic aspect in the gameplay.
Running in the fog without knowing what's coming, or only seeing silhouets instead of having clear vision.
With this game mechanic, people will have to adapt to the weather conditions and their effects and will require to change your gaming style.

A. WEATHER

- Clouded

Standard visibility
Standard brightness
--> Everything will be compared to this

- Fog

Reduced visibility

- Rain (+Thunder)

Move slightly slower
Reduced visibility
(Visibility and brightness greatly increased during a lightning)

- Sunny

Increased brightness
Blinded while looking up
Better visibility

- Snowlandscape and sunny

Increased sliding speed
Makes grabbing things more difficult
Increases brightness

- Snowlandscape and clouded

Increased sliding speed
Makes grabbing things more difficult

- Snow (while falling)

Reduced visibility
Increased sliding speed
Makes grabbing things more difficult

B. DAY & NIGHT
Day and night is just for aestethics. I prefer 4 modes: Morning, Day, Evening, Night. However, just day and night would do it.

Why would I like to see this?

- Maps will have 28 different versions of them just by using the suggestions above.
- Maps will have to be played differently, depending on the conditions
- Maps won't get repetitive quickly.
- It adds extra depth to the game because players will need to adapt
- It will always be a surprise how the map will look exactly
- It feels more realistic (I know it's not Brink's objective to be realistic, but I don't think this would hurt the game)

Feel free to add and commentate.

I know that that it's been confirmed that different levels would have different weather effects and times of day. You can see that Container City seems to take place during dawn or dusk, and I've seen clips of cutscenes that appear to be taking place in the rain... or maybe just underneath a drain pipe... Check out "The Last Stand" Developer diary at about 1:21.

Sadly, I don't think a system like what you're proposing is in place, but it is an awesome idea and I hope that word of this gets to the devs and they at least consider it; though I'd prefer that it would only be implemented as an aesthetic aspect, and not effect gameplay.

Well, I'm glad that they already confirmed some stuff, but I'm afraid that levels will have a fixed weather effect, like most maps in most games.

Even when it's only as an aesthetic aspect, I would still like it. It just gives a better feeling to the game IMO.

They should take the example from the creators of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., they know how to make weather happen random and and be realitisc.

I like this idea although I would think if it where raining it would make using smart to climb more difficult maybe even cause you to fail if not done perfect and fall down.

It's an awesome concept but that would be a lot of work. I do know there will be day and night maps.

Yea, I realise that and they already said that they were balancing the game. However, release is still +- 5/6 months away so we can still hope.

it would be very cool, and really help the game out with realism, but the real question is, would you wait a month or two later for the games release just so it had weather in it? thats why i said no.

I think I actually would if the weather effected gameplay, it would be awesome to be sliding around in the rain and losing control trying to vault.

I say both.

1. I like fighting in the rain; it just looks cool.

2. I don't know about it affecting gameplay though. Slipping while trying to climb up something reminds me of how much I hated the tripping feature they put in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Plus it would probably give an unfair advantage to heavies.

3. It could change gameplay in one way that I don't mind though. When it's raining or snowing or whatever, visibility could be reduced, making long-range combat all but impossible (unless they have thermal scopes or something...). Heck, they could even put in heavy rain, making you unable to see anything more than ten feet away from you. Just an idea.
