Weirdest bug...EVER

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:27 am

I was in Nipton, there are those crucified guys hanging around on crosses, suddenly I notice something is not right - there's a prospector hanging on one of the crosses. I am like, "what the fu... what are you doing on that damn cross? It's reserved for powder gangers!":

This guy jumps down from the cross, draws a varmint rifle and starts shooting at the Legion guys at the entrance to the Nipton hall. What the hell is he doing? He's messing up the entire scenery! What the hell happens here?

Ok, so some initial checks through the in-game console:

I fire up toolset and check what the hell goes on here. Turns out the cross is actually technically a piece of furniture, basically a chair. Technically, NPCs hanging on crosses are actually "sitting" on them. Ok, but why the fuk is a prospector hanging on a cross? So I check the surrounding areas around Nipton and notice that the game spaws a prospector nearby. This guy has an eat package at 20 o'clock in the evening. When he eats, he wants to sit down and this damn cross is the next best piece of sitting furniture the AI was able to find. So my first thought was Obsidian lazies forgot to disable sandbox for the cross chair. But no, they actually set the flag. However, the AI is flawed (hard-coded bug) and will ignore this flag when AI is not fully evaluated which happens when player transitions areas from interior->exterior or when waiting using the Wait menu. And in addition, Obsidian forgot to set prospectors friendly with the Legion, so this moron messed up the entire Nipton Hall approach cutscene. Idiot. Fixy fixy fixy, two hours later I managed to fix the damn bug by setting the radius of eating packages to 0, this way the AI will execute the EAT packages on spot and will not search for furniture to sit on. I've fixed at least 100 bugs in FOV so far, but this is the weirdest yet, Bethesda's quality department are either lazy or stupid, cause there are bugs in this game all over the place

Did you talk to him? Is he your friend? Did you have a drink and talk about how fun killing the legion is?

The game is huge, and something like that is a fluke (a repeating one sure), but still not some glaring unforgivable cause to insult people about.

This further justifiy's that the game should've been delayed another 3 to 6 months.

Perhaps that Prospector was in town at the time? The Legion took everybody. The town wasn't all just Powder Gangers. Looking at this from an RP perspective, I guess.

Not enough beta time, bundled together with lazyness will cause that kind of things to happen.

there's also another huge bug at Nipton. Initially, I set the Legion friendly with the wastelander faction, cause it didn't make sense to me that they would be hostile to pretty much everybody. But then I noticed that this would break some quests, like the mini-encounter where the Legion attacks a caravan passing by near the Wolf ranch. They obviously wouldn't attack it if they were friendly with the wastelander faction. Ok, so I set them back to enemies, even if I suspected this would cause problems along the way. And indeed, I went further south and there's some kind of village or town, haven't visited it yet, got delayed fixing all kinds if damn bugs along the way, so I just looked at the village from a distance through the ironsights of my varmint rifle and I notice Vulpi's legionnaires eradicating the entire town. They are moving to the fort after the Vulpi cutscene at Nipton and they are on a killing spree, since they are hostile to pretty much everybody in the wasteland, they are eradicating everybody! Nice one, Obsidian! So now they get disabled along with Vulpi, but this hostile faction inter-relation will certainly cause problems in other areas as well, this crap happens, because game developers never get the time to test anything, probably not even so much Obsidian's fault, I add bugs in my scripts as well, but I do have the time to test everything, while Bethesda probably tried to release the game by Christmas again, no time for testing, huh?

Just to point this out Bethesda did not develop this game they produced it. Obsidian was the developer. Whether or not Bethesda is involved directly with the bug fixes I can not say.
