"Screen tearing is a visual artifact in video where information from two or more different frames is shown in a display device in a single screen draw.

The artifact occurs when the video feed sent to the device isn't in sync with the display's refresh, be it due to non-matching refresh rates, or simply lack of sync between the two. During video motion, screen tearing creates a torn look as edges of objects (such as a wall or a tree) fail to line up.

Tearing can occur with most common display technologies and video cards, and is most noticeable on situations where horizontally-moving visuals are commonly found, such as in slow camera pans in a movie, or classic side-scrolling video games.
Prevention

The ways to prevent video tearing are dependent on the technology of the display device and video card, the software in use, and the nature of the material being shown. The most common solution is to use multiple buffering.

Most systems will use this function along with one or both of these two methods:
V-sync

Vertical synchronization is an option found in most systems, wherein the video card is prevented from doing anything visible to the display memory until after the monitor has finished its current refresh cycle.

During the vertical blanking interval, the driver would order the video card to either rapidly copy the off-screen graphics area into the active display area (double buffering), or treat both memory areas as displayable, and simply switch back and forth between them (page flipping).

When vertical synchronization is in use, the frame rate of the rendering engine will exactly equal the monitor's refresh rate, if it was higher. Although this feature normally results in improved video quality, it is not without trade-offs in some cases. When one wishes to benchmark a video card or rendering engine, it is generally implied that the hardware and software render the display as fast as possible, without regard to monitor's capabilities or the resultant video tearing. Otherwise, the monitor and video card will throttle the benchmarking program, causing it to generate invalid results.

Vertical synchronization can also lead to artifacts in video and movie presentations, as they are generally recorded at somewhat low frame rates (usually 24 to 30 FPS). When such a movie is played on a monitor set for a typical 60 Hz refresh rate, the video player will miss the monitor's deadline fairly frequently, in addition to the interceding frames being displayed at a slightly higher rate than they were intended for, resulting in an effect similar to judder.

Video games, which have a wide variety of rendering engines, tend to benefit well from vertical synchronization, as a rendering engine is normally expected to build each frame in real time, based on whatever the engine's variables specify at the moment a frame is requested."

Its pretty much when the amount of FPS is greater then the TV can display. Which makes the screen change frames faster. Meaning that part of the tv is on frame 1 and the other part of the tv is on frame 2 already. People call this screen tearing. It also can occur when the FPS is lower then the screen can display as well, but if you have Vsync enabled it will refresh the entire screen at once.

As to the OP-Almost all people want the game to look smoother, so no screen tearing all the time would be good. (Vsync Enabled)

Thats more Aliasing. (Which is why you always want to have Anti-Aliasing enabled at some level) [I believe the Xbox runs at 2x AA]

That's not screen tearing, that's aliasing. Which is remedied (mostly) by anti-aliasing. Unless you were referring to 3d artifacts, which is completely different from both.

I can safely say i've never encontered this particular occurence. Must be a benefit if playing strictly console.

I encountered it with Assassins Creed 2 (mostly during the load sections) on the Xbox360. So it can happen on the consoles as well. On the PC you have an option to turn on Vsync for all apps or just specific ones. (Games)

Consoles are already locked into 30fps. Screen tearing should only occur when the GPU can't keep up - and there's not much you can do about that.

Plenty of screen tearing on the PS3, every time I turned my little head.

On the PC it is controllable by how fast your vid card is.
I can't remember if the PC had a vsync option, but yeah screen tearing is a major headache.

Because Vsync doesn't have any parameters or settings other than "on" or "off."

The op said that if the games going to have screen tearing than at least make it a toggle? Why would the devs make it a toggle? If they made it a toggle they could just eliminate it completely. It doesn't make sense at all to be a toggle...

Did you even read post #4, much less the rest of the thread? If not, do so now. I'll wait.

Okay then...tearing is a phenomenon than is eliminated by turning on Vsync. The developers do not "add" or "remove" tearing, it's a consequence of the end user's video system and its capabilities. The only toggles devs can add is the option to toggle Vsync on or off as needed to deal with tearing, should it be present. The ability to turn on Vsync, which is a toggle, would meet the OP's criteria of being able to toggle on and off a solution to tearing, which would then effectively toggle the tearing itself on or off...indirectly.

And in fact, the OP did apparently read Post #4 because he then went on to clarify:

Please give Xbox 360 Users a Option this time to Toggle On and Off V-Sync.


See how that works?

Yep, has in any case where I've encountered it.

Then why don't the devs add it?


Now that, I do not know. Could be somehow related to the hardware consoles use, but I'm nowhere near knowledgeable enough about them to say. I stick with my PC and don't pay much (if any) attention to'em myself. Not knocking'em by any stretch, just my choice. :shrug:

In all honesty I don't see much of a difference

I dunno, that's really not a very good comparison. It's more of an in-motion thing. No AA is jaggies, jaggies everywhere, wheras 32AA you'd be hard pressed to find a sharp corner on anything but a knife.
@Alois; I get the idea he meant, why isn't it just -on-. Why start adding graphics options to console games now, when their main strength is that they don't hvae any.

Here's how it works; V-Sync limits the framerate to that of the monitor, which can eliminate tearing.

The 360 is ALREADY limited to 30fps, it never displays more than that. So, unless you have a monitor that can't display more than 30 frames per second, V-sync on 360 games will do absolutely NOTHING.

If you get tearing on a 360, that cannot possibly be because of lack of V-sync, because it is already capped at 30fps.
