Well, guess I`m out!

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:50 pm

Skyrim has suddenly developed a serious CTD on a quest. I`ve spent nigh two days using all my previous experience with these games to fix it and I can`t. I`ve never seen an issue quite like this that allowed me to play for many hours then stopped dead in its tracks. Removing mods don`t work, playing with my system graphics, sound don`t work, verifying with crappy Steam don`t work, etc, etc, etc doing a rain dance in desperation don`t work.

All I know is the moment that door opens in the Potema quest the game CTDS. And it will not stop doing it.

I can`t back out unless I go to a very, very old save. Worked fine with pre 1.4- Won`t now.

I won`t bore you any more as I`ve posted in the other forums, just thought I`d say cheerio until Bethesda pull their fingers out or I come up with an Eureka moment.

Sounds like a bit of a sticky widget to me. Hope you get your game fixed!

I did this quest recently. I can't remember whether it was pre 1.4 or just after. I'm sure I've got a save there, so I might try it and get back to you. The Solitude quests have not bugged out on me yet.

I feel sorry for you. Personally I found that Skyrim is far more stable game than any other Bethesda games. 200 hours and it only crashed maybe 3 times. This is a vast improvement over Morrowind's "You better save every 3 minutes and have several save files" or even Oblivion's "I don't always crash, but when I do, I make sure it's only when you haven't saved in a while."

I hope you get it sorted, My usually rock stable Skyrim recently developed a nasty habit of crashing at Shimmermist cave & i was forced to start over.
My issue was a combination of a couple of mods not liking eachother & even with these mods removed it would still crash.

Try going to the testing hall & waiting for a few days.

It could be worse, Skyrim could be as horrendously unreliable as it's previous offerings.

My first PC use to crash out at Cidna Mine and Jovaskr. But luckily after I did all the quests. I haven't been there since 1.4, so It may have been sorted.

Ignore the quest and do something else?

You can "coc riverwood" if you are trapped or something.

-this-, although 1.4 was still a major fail.

This is why I'm terrified of mods. Removing them won't help as some store data in your save game file, which may corrupt it.

try from earlier save

I went way back (losing a lot and tried again) doing things different still CTD.

What quest is this?

Potemic (I think name is) the second part under the solitude chapel. Right at her death as she swirls about and flies for the door- It CTDs. I`ve narrowed it right down to exactly when the doors open.

In my 48 hours trials, I noticed that disabling AVG delayed this crash slightly which is weird, so I disabled all firewalls, crappy Steam off, etc, etc...but as I got close it still happened.

It`s either a Mod which has somehow totally conflicted with this one thing in my many quests and many hours of playing or its a bug in 1.4. It`s hard to say which because I removed all mods and tested, but something might still be residing there and of course with Steam I can`t try an earlier Patch to test that!

If I could try the previous Patch like I would have before then I could confirm if it was a buggy Patch or not- Now I can`t. Thanks Steam and Beth. can`t even fix problems myself cos you tie my hands.

Everything else i`ve been able to try I have. My only solution is to wipe the whole game and reinstall, but frankly I can`t be bothered. When I`ve put loads of hours into a game I tend not to go back to it for a few months at least. I don`t like games screwing my precious time. I`ve left my report with the Tech guys in their thread (in a somewhat annoyed manner due to tiredness and frustration). maybe they`ll figure it out but I doubt it`ll happen soon.

I actually stopped playing Dragon Age for Skyrim so now I`ll go back to that.

I know one clothing replacer causes a CTD in that spot due to a fault at jarl clothing model that she wears. if you have meshes/clothing and textures/clothing folders in the Data folder, try moving them away and try again.

I had something like that happen in one quest. Not the one you are in, but it kept crashing every few minutes. Is it possible to just leave the quest to finish later? Not familiar with that one. Might be better to do other quests than reinstall the game.

Hope you can work it out.

With an avatar like that, I`m not at all surprised at your brainless response.

I had similar yesterday, it was a mod conflict problem and it also wouldn't clear by just disabling the mod on it's own.
You just have to try dissabling/removing the mod and using an earlier save.
First time I have had such a conflict, it will make me more wary of adding tmods that add homes, home upgrades or dungeons though.
I did eventually sort it by dissabling almost all my mods, apart from ones I know for sure never gave me any problems, and reloading an earlier save.

Sorry to hear that.

I personally wait until mods are absolutely rock solid and/or highly peer tested before I bring them onto my system before CK has been out for a while.

That said, getting rid of them all and going to an earlier save while clearing cache is the only thing that has ever worked for me in the past. Good advice itt.

Better looking than a flea bitten rag cat that looks like it`s just been through a lawn mower that`s for sure.

Hmm. A sensible suggestion. Never tried using the console to do that kind of thing. I`ll see what can be done there.

If you're on PC, you could always teleport yourself out of that cell using the console?

coc Riverwood

will take you to Riverwood for example.

Thanx.

And this is the REAL reason I made this thread. I knew I`d get some sarcastic stupidity, but I hoped that maybe some people might think of something I hadn`t.

Cheers.

As ToJKa alluded to earlier this looks like a known issue. See:

uesp.net-wiki-skyrim_talk:The_Wolf_Queen_Awakened#Crash_to_desktop_bug

Hope it helps (replace '-' with. '/')
