Werewolf: Incorporeal Fist
Introduction
Hello and welcome to Werewolf: Incorporeal Fist! Werewolf is a murder-mystery game played here on the Bethesda forums. I am DonkeyCavity, and I will be the host of this game. As host, it is my job to run and manage the game, place the evidence and keep things fair. The rules of the game may seem intimidating at a first glance, but Werewolf has a smooth and enjoyable learning curve, and is a highly tense and enjoyable game once you get the hang of it. As such, I encourage anyone at all to have a go.
Setting
Nobody remembers what year it is.
When every day is the same, there isn't any reason to.
A terrible plague ravages the world, and society teeters on the brink of total collapse. Medicine is available, but those without vast amounts of money become slaves to the medicine. Working for huge, faceless corporations to pay off their vast debts, thousands of lower-class civilians toil out their days, waiting to die.
There is one way out. Each year, a group of ordinary people engage in a horrific spectator event, from which most will never return.
This is their story.
Rules of the Game
Werewolf is essentially a murder-mystery game, which includes some role-playing elements. The game pits a large, uninformed majority (the innocents) against a small, informed and malicious minority (the Hunters). In order to participate, each player needs to fill out a "Character Creation Profile" ? the character you create will be your voice in the game. At the beginning of each game, players are randomly assigned roles ? either innocent or werewolf. The Hunters will be informed who the other Hunters are, while the innocents are told nothing but their role.
The game starts with a "write-up", which is a narrative piece documenting the events surrounding the game setting, the actions of each of the characters in the game, and the initial murder scene. Players are required to look through that write-up (which may include pictures), searching for evidence in order to decide which of their number are Hunters. Every player may vote for the execution of another player, and at the end of the day (a 22 hour period), whoever has received the most execution votes is executed, and that first day is over.
During the day, the Hunters need to decide amongst themselves who they will murder during the night. When the next day begins (usually two hours after the previous day ends), another write-up will be posted, similar to the first. It will include evidence, details on the execution, and how the murder occurred. The cycle continues in this manner (day, execution, murder, new day) until one side achieves victory.
On the second night, and every third night after that, the Hunters may choose to convert an innocent to their side instead of killing somebody. This is known as a conversion. If the conversion is "blocked" (more on that later), then it may be held the following day along with a murder. This will continue until somebody is converted.
If you are still confused about how the game works, start by reading through a previous Werewolf game, which can be found HERE. Alternatively, please do not hesitate to send me a PM about anything at all.
Winning the Game
The game will last for 10 days. If by that time there are still Hunters remaining, they will be declared the victors. If not, the innocents will be victorious.
Alternatively, either teams can win by solving all three "Challenges" before the other team.
Case-maker's Protection
Every day, the player who leads the case which gains the most amount of votes will receive automatic protection - I will PM the wolves and let them know which players they are not allowed to murder. Players protected this way can still be converted. I will be the judge of who "leads" a particular case - multiple players can receive protection if I feel they have been equally influential.
Other Rules
Communicating with other players privately is allowed; however, you are not allowed to contact them directly. If you wish to send a message to another player, send it to me with the username of the player you wish to send it to, and I will pass it on as soon as I'm online. If somebody contacts another player outside of this method, they will be banned from the game. The exception to this rule is the wolves, who may PM each other freely.
"Role Revealing" (stating that you have a role, regardless of whether or not it is true) is allowed. However, doing so will mean that you will not be able to be protected by regular "Angels", only by the "Arch Angel". Quoting your Role PM, however, is strictly forbidden.
I reserve the right to kill you[r character] at any given time.
Challenges
In addition to the other rules outlined here, there are several "bonus rounds" for players who wish to gain more power for their team. In each player's Role PM, they will receive clues which will help in solving three hidden challenges in the game. The first player to figure out the answer to each challenge is rewarded with an extra, secret vote which they can use by PMing the target to me. Both wolves and innocents can gain this bonus. If a single team (wolves or innocents) can between them solve all 3 challenges, they will instantly win the game. The challenges are as follows:
1. Which country does the game take place in?
2. What is the keycode to the door?
3. What is the password to the main computer?
Participating in the Game
If order to participate, the only thing you need is time, and a little dedication. You need to be able to put at least half an hour a day into the game, although an hour a day is preferable. If you don't think you'll have the time or inclination to participate properly, then please don't sign up.
Character Creation Profile
In order to play the game, you need to fill out and post the character creation profile below:
Name: Pronounceable, please.
Age: Must be older than 16.
Weight: In metric, please. HERE is a converter.
General Appearance: Clothing, hair color, and striking details.
Possessions: Must include a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 items.
Occupation: Unemployed is an option.
Personality: How does your character view the world? Is he good under pressure? Introverted or extraverted? This section is very important, so please include as much detail as possible.
Likes: Interests, hobbies, political/religious/philosophical views.
Dislikes: Fears, pet hates, dislikes.
History: A few lines is sufficient if you don't feel like writing an essay. Please include your character's current location in the world as well.
If I feel that your profile is not detailed enough, I will PM you asking you to change certain details. Even if you meet the minimum specified requirements for each trait, I may ask you to change traits for balancing purposes (this is particularly likely for Personality traits).
[Posting]
I ask that you post coherently and sensibly. To that end, I will enforce a two-strike policy on incoherence, blatantly terrible and obstructive spelling and grammar, or trolling. Simply put, if you make the game more difficult for other players, you will be removed from the game.
Furthermore, in order to make things easier for everyone, I will require everyone to follow a simple posting format: Underline your posting name, put character actions in italics, speak in character or mark other out-of-character comments with a simple "OOC" (out of character). See the example below.
This has been an interesting day, but based on the tiny size of the footprints I suggest that we should execute Gary Coleman.
Sits down quietly in a corner to contemplate.
OOC: How long until voting ends?
Roles:
Innocent Roles:
Participant: The regular people "playing" this horrific game. If a Participant is executed, they will be allowed to make a short death-speech before being killed.
Informer: When night falls, the Hunters are not the only ones hunting. Every night, the Informer may search the belongings of another player, discovering clues about their allegiance and role.
Sleuth: The Sleuth is not willing to merely accept their fate, and will do whatever they can to search for evidence. Every night, the Sleuth may search an entire room, including a very brief search of everyone sleeping within it.
Survivalist: The survivalist will do what they can to preserve life ? their own. Once in the game, at any time, a Survivalist may go into hiding for the night, protecting themselves from death and conversion.
Die Hard: The Die Hard is either really tough, or just damn lucky. If the Die Hard is killed by Hunters, they will live one more day before passing on.
"Arch Angel": This participant is given the duty of protecting as many lives as possible. The "Arch Angel" may protect a single player every night from both conversion and murder. When the "Arch Angel" is killed, a new "Arch Angel" will be appointed from the remaining "Angels".
"Angel" (x2): Similar to the "Arch Angel", the "Angels" do their best to protect innocent life. The only difference is that "Angels" cannot protect against conversions. When the "Arch Angel" is killed, a new "Arch Angel" will be appointed from the remaining "Angels". Angels do not know the identities of the other angels.
Werewolf Roles:
The Slayer: With the right motivation, anyone can be a murderer. More than that; with the right motivation, a man can become a monster. The Slayer commands the Werewolf team, deciding upon who will be killed and converted each night. In addition, as long as The Slayer is alive, he may make an additional kill every second night. If the Slayer is executed, another Hunter will lead the Hunters but will not gain the Slayer's powers.
The Deceiver: A shadowy figure, the Deceiver is never as he appears. If the Deceiver is searched by the Sleuth or Snitch, he will appear as being innocent. In addition, every night the Deceiver may choose an innocent to frame. That person will appear as a werewolf if they are searched that night.
The Silencer: Talk, you die. Every night, the Silencer may choose somebody to silence. A silenced person may not speak the next day, and may not use any powers they may have. A player may not be silenced for more than one day in a row. A silenced person is still completely free to communicate and participate by PM.
A note to Experienced Players
This game has a number of differences to all games which I have participated in. Here are some of the major differences I'm planning on including:
- A different evidence style than you are probably accustomed to. Due to the entertainment nature of the setting, I feel that I can include more puzzle-based and abstract evidence as well as usual evidence. Expect to see puzzles, codes, cryptic hints and possibly even riddles along with usual profile-based evidence.
- As you have probably noticed, this game is very role-heavy. I feel that more roles means a more active and interesting game, and forces the Hunters to choose their targets much more carefully.
- A more narrative-based game. Evidence and gameplay will still be what it's all about, of course, but I'd like to incorperate something of a story-arch into the game. For that reason, write-up's will probably be longer than usual and less periodic, while nightly PMs may be slightly shorter.
- Werewolf Roles. The Silencer is there as an alternative of killing a player who is onto a wolf, while the Deceiver should help counterbalance the number of innocent roles as well as spicing things up a little. Converts don't get any special powers.
- Participants will be able to PM me with a "death-speech" if they are executed, if they so wish. This will be included in the write-up.
Good luck, and enjoy the game!
