Ok, basically you have.

Lead, to make the bullet with.
Powder to propel it.
A casing or shell (shells go into shotguns) to hold it all
a primer to set the powder off.
Led is universal
Powder is according to guns, like .22 powder is not going to work for a 10MM.

Primers are going with small or large hand gun and s/l rifles.
Casing are self explained.

for eaxmple

1 10MM casing
1 large pistol primer
X led
X large handgun powder
=
1 10MM round.

This is much more in-depth than what FO3 /w FWE had... but some niggles:

Powder is, for the most part, powder. There's no such thing as "large handgun powder" vs "small handgun powder"

Rimfire doesn't have a separate primer. It's put right into the bottom of the casing and 'spun' into the rim. (.22 is like this). For that matter, primers are primers. They aren't any different because the cartridge is a bit wider.

Also, the game also calls shells/casings 'hulls' for some ammunition.

Good ideas, shaky implementation. Whomever fleshed it out, hasn't spent much time with real firearms.

True there is not really large vs small powder however there are many different types of powder and if you used the wrong one you could easily destroy your firearm, incorrect on the primers small and large exist and they are very different sizes, hulls is the term for empty shotgun cases. But I am ok with the simplification I don't want to play a game about properly reloading it isn't that fun to do in real life.

I want a .44 Long Colt revolver with black powder shells ... so I can bravely run away by making a big cloud of smoke on demand :D

To keep it realistic, lets make it so the gun "breaks down" every 3-4 shots - have to clean it or the drum won't move! Abraxo to the rescue!

It would be a bit much to expect the player to know when to use IMR-4895 and when to use Red-Dot or Unique.

You're correct about rimfire, but when it comes to centerfire there are various sizes of primers depending on what cartridges you're loading.

A common name for empty shotgun shells.

One isn't going to learn to reload playing NV, but it's shockingly detailed for a game.
