What are safe chests to store items?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 9:52 pm

Hey all.

Just a quick question, I have started a new character who has just joined the Thieves Guild. I haven't yet obtained enough money to buy a house in Whiterun so what I was wondering is whether you can store items in the chest they give you next to your bed. I assume this is your bed and chest since all the others are "owned."

Thanks.

I've left stuff lying all over the place and all of it was still there when I went back.

I can't help with this by telling you where it is safe to store stuff permanently, but I can tell you that as long as you travel back to the place you store stuff every couple of game days everything will be where you left it.

Spoiler
I use the old witches house near Riverwood to store my surplus gear. I just dump it in the dresser with her junk and it is always there when I go back there to craft stuff.

I leave all of my ingredients in a satchel near the potion crafting table and the full soul gems in the dresser. Saves weight and is convenient for crafting binges.

The advice that we get to read at the bottom of the loading screen (we get ample time to read these) suggests that the only safe place is a chest or container located in a home that you own.

I, for one, have also had occasion to store quite a load in Lydia's trunk.

If you follow the Stormcloack you get a key to a house in Riverwood and can use the trunk at foot of bed. However I've had a few things get marked as owned by someone else so you will have to steal your own stuff. The easiest storage is to go directly to the mages guild and get your own room. There are several containers to separate and organize your stuff since Skyrim removed that feature. :cryvaultboy:

Until the Editor comes out, this question can not be definitely answered. However, in the past the only two containers that were dangerous to put stuff in were those that respawned and those owned by someone else. With the first, you could usually not put anything in the container, with the second, the item would be there, but ownership would get transferred so you would be stealing if you took it back out.

I really don't think any container that is not owned that you can put stuff into is a problem. Even more so, the room/bed that you get assigned by a faction should be safe as the developers would not expect someone to have money for a house early one, but have loot to store. They would have built in a way to store it.

To test this, create a save point, put your stuff in and wait 73 hours in another cell and then go look, then wait a week and a day, then check, and then finally wait 33 days. Note, the time scale is fast enough in this game that you could just have your character stand around safe place while you go run an errand or something and the in game time will pass while you are testing this. However, if it does not reset after 33 days, then it is not going to reset ever.
