What are you going to ROLEPLAY?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:48 am

When I first pop in the disc..

I will start a hardcoe game, turn off all hud elements, skip through the intro cutscenes and dialogue, ignore quest markers... basically have no idea about anything.. then step out into the desert looking to make a nice humble life for myself.

eventually ill play through the MQ, but I want my first experience to be totally new in every sense.

That seems a little......much. But, it's your disc, so it's none of my business. I however, am taking in every detail, some people like to fly by the seat of their pants, I prefer to learn as much as I can to prepare for my adventure, spoilers don't upset me, I just accept it with a smile and add it to my mental guidebook.

I usually like to pull a 'This is how I'd do it...' character.

I assume there will be Points of Interest markers on the compass like in FO3, I will find a way to disable those first. I liked exploring in FO3 without having icons appear on the map when a landmark/cave/city was nearby. It makes exploring really interesting.

There are still some locations I've heard about in Fallout 3 but never found.

During my first play through any game, I try to play myself. I try to do what I imagine I would do in such a situation. Whether that be side with man A over man B, run from combat or fight, protect the damsel in distress and hope I get laid for it but not demand nor ask for such a reward, or in the case of Fallout, swipe that box of ammo off the counter when the shop keeper has his back turned. (In a survival situation you can bet your ass I'd steal essential supplies like ammo from a shop if I needed them but couldn't afford them and I thought I could get away with it. Probably wouldn't outright rob anyone like a raider/highwayman would unless I just had no other option, and then I would try to keep everything as peaceful as possible.)

So in the end my first play through always ends up being a bit chaotic. An altruistic deed here, a selfish deed there, maybe an outright evil deed somewhere along the way. But once its all said and done, people can look back at my life (in game) and see that for the most part I was a good person but not always selfless or entirely honest.

I only just now took the Explorer perk at level 20 that reveals all the map markers to you, even though I've played through FO3 nearly a dozen times now. But I figured this was probably going to be my last playthrough for several years, with New Vegas coming in a few weeks and it improving the gameplay in every way I've wished for. So I figured I'd take the perk and see if there were any places I'd missed or forgotten about in my playthroughs.

I found Points of Interest markers just fine, after all, they just meant there was something interesting in that direction, no spoilers involved. But the quest markers were awful. What the heck was up with Bethesda telling you where Vault 112 was in the main quest? They told you very specifically in a note, and then pointed to it on your map! That should have been an epic part of the quest trying to discover the location yourself! Give a vague indication like "somewhere in the west" and then let the player search for it. Or go to Vault-Tec HQ and find the location and get it marked that way. The most creative location and concealment for a Vault we've ever seen in the Fallout games and they wasted it by throwing up a big flashing THIS WAY arrow above it.

I'll probably ignore the main quest in New Vegas for a good long while and just explore. That way I won't have flashing "go here next" icons everywhere.

I found the quest markers somewhat useful at times. I had them disabled initially, but the game relies on it so heavily that real directions are almost never given. I had no idea how to get to the GNR building. I tried walking at it from all sorts of directions but I could never get through. Once I enabled quest markers again I figured out that the only way to reach places in that area is through metro tunnels.

But I agree about the Vault 112 part.

I actually like not knowing if something interesting is nearby. You can look at something in the distance and wonder if something's there, and see if that's the case when you arrive and not know from quite a distance in advance. I don't know how many times I must've walked past Andale before discovering it finally...

a bit of a ego merc, selling his services to whomever pays him the most, not who is "right" or "wrong" to work for. Most likely have no companions, expect for the dog.

Gameplay wise I be playing on Normal difficulty with hardcoe mode on (unless I find the eat/drink/sleep mechanic to be poorly done and make more hazzle then fun)

Definitely a cowboy type though I think for the right reward I will have no problem with some evil doing. Actually if anyone's feeling helpful I need a first name that sounds good with Fontaine.

1st character, a do-gooder young man with proficiency in energy weapons, science, and influencing people.
2nd character, a egocentric guy/gal who view things with his/her view and defeats his/her enemies by sneaking and punching.
3rd character, an opportunistic mobster who shoot other people, whack other people, and trade goods for just one purpose, Money.
4th character > , I don't know....

One of two things, depending on my pre-order pack.

If the mercenary pack, I'm going to be from a slaving town like The Den. I was raised there and taught how to use pre-war computers to help the slavers. They'd take me with them and I'd provide support with my grenade launcher, then tell them if any of the stuff they found was useful to salvage. However, I had serious moral problems with helping them. Eventually, I found an opening and bolted, heading south to Vegas, far beyond the reach of the old place. I'd make a new life for myself, likely supporting NCR (at least, at first.) A package? Sure, I'll deliver it. Sounds simple enough. "Jack Roland"

If the tribal pack, I'm obviously going to be from a tribal village. At age 13, I left the village with throwing spears and my trusty machete, wanting to explore the world and learn what society was like. I became a mercenary and traveled, quickly gaining a small reputation as a tribal warrior for hire. I'd use my sneak skulls and proficiency with blades to complete jobs. At age 21, I wandered into Vegas. I'd always wanted to see it and for some reason, it just felt like home. What's that? Oh, yeah, I'm for hire. A package? Where to? Oh, no problem, I'll see the sights on the way there! "S'rasha"

Now...to choose. *Head-desk*

My first play through I will focus on the Main Quest, maybe exclusively. This way on subsiquent play throughs I will know just where to start ignoring the MQ so the game does not end for me.

As for the characters, my favorite is the Charming Gun Slinger. I will try talk my way out of or into things, but if you don't agree with me or like it, well, eat lead. My character may seem like a nice guy on the surface, but they have a hair trigger temper and a few shall we say, issues.

Haha I'm glad you caught where I got the name! I was actually thinking of just doing Frank but it sounds too much like a gangster name.

I think I like the way Phillip sounds with it , thanks dan!

Your name shall be.. Gideon, Gideon Fontaine... :celebration:

I think it suits for a manly 25-40 year old character.

You don't need FONV for that. LOL, just kidding.

Seriously though, with respect to the OP, I'll probably be the opportunistic mercenary type who sells his death dealing skills to the highest bidder. I'll probably wind up being Mr. House's personal assassin, killing everyone he pays me to until he runs out of enemies for me to kill and if he stops paying me, well then I'll just have to kill him and take what's left of his fortune... ;)

Man there a quite a few of these aren't there...

um...I guess for New Vegas I'll really try and slow down whatever I'm doing
I don't wanna say I played FO3 super fast,
but probably faster in a sense that I didn't really take alot of the stuff in
Once I really slowed down, started looking at every corner, talking to every NPC, and actually looking at what the knomes and teddy bears were doing to each other, I had a much better playthrough
I'll try and make sure I do this in FNV

1: me (what i would do, how i would handle it, ect.)
2: since ive preordered at gamestop: a young child named emil, growing up with his grandfather after an incident of raiders attacking, murdering the father, and dragging off the mother. one day they came back. his grandfather tells him to go upstairs and hide. as he hides upstairs he finds a small compartment, inside the armored vault 13 outfit and a brand new 10mm pistol. emil realizes the stories his grandpa told about his great grandfather meeting the Vault Dweller himself before the Dweller passed away. he hears gunshots go off, the raiders shouting out to search the area. they never found emil, and after they left, he himself left as a child, with the armor and the pistol, to find revenge.
its 10 years later, wearing his patched up suit and a scratched up, weathered 10mm pistol, he discovers the raiders that murdered are currently being held at prim. he takes a simple courier mission to make some money along the way...it all goes hell from there...

what do you guys think? plausible? :hubbahubba:
