What is Bethesda doing with their money?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:36 am

Where is all their money (Bethesda & Obsidian) going? They sold millions of copies for Fallout 3, will or already have sold millions for New Vegas. They are not upgrading or building a new engine. You would think they could put in a little extra time and make a game like New Vegas solid. This game is so buggy and the developers and such need to spend my money and yours to get this right. I would of rather waited a year on this game, and it be almost bug free. Than it be rushed and full of bugs like it is. I just want to know where is my money and your money going, obviously not much is being spent in checking their games for bugs or building a new engine. I am so frustrated with this game it just froze again: uggggh

Considering they didn't make it, who knows. Obsidian made FNV, Bethesada only provided the game engine and publishing.

For one thing, when you say "where is all their money going" you do realize Bethesda has more than just one game going on, right? I don't feel that's really a necessary thing to say. Plus as was said above, they didn't actually build the game.

However, I do agree that a game should come out as bug free as possible.

I have had no issues at all with FNV and I have put over 10 hours into the game so far.

Obsidian has a long track record of buggy games. Great in every other aspect but bugs galore. Not sure why they haven't fixed these issues in their development process but within a month the game will be solid. Alpha Protocol just received its first patch almost a month ago after its release in may. We're doing pretty good with this but then Bethesda is actually backing FONV unlike sega did with Alpha Protocol. Also, I intentionally leave sega lower case as a sign of disrespect.

Be glad that you have a game that is functioning at all or just wait another year before you play it ;) same price, same gameplay, post patches. Its exactly what you're asking for.

Same.

I do know that there is a Fallout MMORPG in the works. Who is making/publishing it, I do not know.

Damn straight. As much as I like Fallout I'd rather see a Fallout title suffer to provide more resources for TESV. It's a worthy sacrifice. We've had two Fallout games and not a scrap of information about The Elder Scrolls. I'm taking that as a good sign (especially with NV using the old engine). I'm guessing they're learning from Oblivion's mistakes and completely overhauling the engine for TESV so we can have a game of greatness once again. They'll want to show it off with TESV though.

Well i haven't found NV to be that much more buggy than 3.As for the engine if they decided to make a completely new one it would of been more than a year. I have a feeling Bethesda was leaving this mostly up to Obsidian while doing their own thing(hopefully TES V).

A new engine I believe. F:NV will be the last game using the Gamebryo engine.

Edit: And just so you know; making a new engine is time consuming and [censored] [censored] expensive

I don't mean to get off topic, but they have at least given this much information: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=162212

Also, at the bottom of the post it says
Edit (29 July 2010): before you run off to the official forums to report on this unique nugget of information, please take another look at the date this was originally posted and reconsider...

But I didn't reconsider.

You're complaining theres no new engine now... Despite this being common knowledge since, well, since it was announced?

As for where the money is "going", a quick look at gaming news sites will show Zenimax (Bethesda's puppet masters) are on a bit of a spending spree.

I remember long long ago there was a good number of people advocating Bethesda moving over to CryEngine. Bethesda didn't make Gamebryo (the engine Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout: New Vegas were made on, along with Morrowind using an older version) so I somewhat doubt they would develop their own for a new game. I also remember some people advocating a move to Source but I doubt that would work as well. As I recall someone actually imported some of Oblivion's landscape into CryEngine and had a considerable performance increase.

Well, after reading the news link posted above dated April 1st 2010, it looks like Bethesda handed off the TES project to an independant design group. Meanwhile Bethesda is focusing their efforts on making Fallout 4 ( ) and other projects.

I'm glad someone with no understanding of how a business really works wants to know what they're doing with their money.

My advice, if you're so keen on knowing what they're doing with their money, buy some shares in ZeniMax Media, and they'll disclose what they do with their money to you.

you are a moron.

I played for almost 20 hours straight with one single glitch, and guess how I did it...i didn't buy my game from steam. fixed.

all of you people are seriously stupidly funny with your cries of doom and hate making up all these stories of "bugs" to have something to whine about. oh no you bought the game from a crappy distributor who hacks up the code in ways it wasn't meant to in order to make it proprietary to their client....it's not bethesdas fault you decided to buy it there instead of from a distributor that gives you a clean copy of the game.

Without me having to match your language - did you pay attention to your installation?

You might have noticed that steam is used on those CDs as much as it is from steam purchased copies - its the DRM method used for this game

Any "Hacking up of the code" is equaly required in your game as it is everyone elses. And since Bethesda and Obsidan decided to use steam, then guess what - the code is meant to be hacked up that way

That also doesnt account for console glitches, or the glitches that reviewers have (I presume they're sent steamless copies?)

Bugs and glitches are always going to be a hit and miss thing - some people will have them, some will either not, or not notice them.
