What is a "critical strike"?

The perk for sword specialization says that it gives a chance of a critical strike. How much extra damage does it do? Double? How does this perk compare to the bleed damage from axes?

Heres the wiki: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:One-handed the damage percentages for one handed are shown for each upgrade. You can find the same info for axes on that site as well.

Edit: One important note at the bottom of that page:

"Bladesman gives a rather minor increase to damage--having all three levels of this perk only increases your average damage by 10% of the weapon's base damage, or at most 2.1 damage per attack."

It was tested recently in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1310006-complete-character-design-freedom-damage-resist-caps-and-ridiculous-damage-thread-6/ or http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1313851-complete-character-design-freedom-damage-resist-caps-and-ridiculous-damage-thread-7/ topic.

Iirc, with 3/3 bladesman the crits add 12,5% damage. I can't remember the numbers on the axe bleed, but overall they are ahead on enemies that can bleed, while swords win out on stuff that can't (undeads, dwemer bots and so on). Maces will theoretically pull ahead againt heavily armored opponents but very few enemies has an armor rating at all (only men/elves/beast races), and their armor rating tends to be low.

I see... is this the same for 2-handed weapons? It sounds like the critical strike is only based on the base damage, so upgrading your weapon won't make the perk better. I guess axes are better?
