I got Fallout: New Vegas 3 days ago. The installation went well but when I started a game, it crashed right after the opening cinematic.
After trying different graphic option (the game set up the default graphic at ultra, so I tried lowering it), I went on the internet and found a file called d3d9.dll. When copied to the game folder, it no longer crashes.
But now, in the option, if I used the default options, it sets me up with a Geforce 7900 GS at medium detail (I have 2 Geforce GTX470 in SLI configuration).
The game runs great, except the radio's music glitch everytime I loot something (anyone else has this problem?)

Yeah one of the side effects of the fix is that it identifies your card as a 7xxx series nVidia card. Actually, even the ati version of this fix does that as well. I think that has something to do with how it forces the game to use different shader packages and handle facegen slightly differently.

Point is that if you see that and are using the d3d9.dll fix then that is not a problem, just something inherent to using the fix. I'm not using the fix myself and yes sometimes when I am looting the radio will stutter. Not sure why, but it is something I can live with compared to problems I COULD be having; not saying I don't hope it gets adressed eventually though.

I did notice I get the radio stuttering less often once I turned down the anisotropic filtering to 8x. Also, you may wish to play with turning other settings up - not because they will fix anything but because if the fix has sorted out your crashing issue you can probably also run the game at much higher settings than medium. One thing to avoid though is having your water reflection detail above medium. On some nVidia cards it seems like they can become very displeased by how Gamebryo asks them to render water and water reflections.

I was using this file to fix the FPS drop around NPCs problemo, it works great.

Does anyone know if this fix is still needed, or has there been a patch on steam fixing it? People don't seem to be moaning about it anymore...(I'd check myself but not at my comp)

Also why we're talking about the file, is there a downside to it? I've seen people dumping on how it works, but don't really understand myself. It almost seems too good to be true (ie why didn't obsidian just do whatever the file does??)

You still need it. I just got the game and even after steam patched it, I had to download it.

Dude, how do I know my game has automatically patched btw? I'm running in steam but have seen no sign since first playing that the game has ever patched. There's no version number on main menu screen either.
