What a difference this makes!

I recently installed a mod that removes the compass feature, and let me tell you, I've never felt so immersed! Removing the compass, and the features that show you nearby sites of interest, makes you feel so in-tune with the game. You actually have to explore.

It makes finding new caves, dungeons, etc. so much more exciting and rewarding. Sneaking around the world, just seeing what you can find, having to climb mountains to get your bearings... it's all wonderful.

Just my two cents. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a little more out of the game.

I wouldn't mind being able to turn off the compass but I imagine it is a nightmare with the current journal in this game. Or does it work well, without compass, with the current journal in this game?

You still have the markers on the map to go off of.

I couldn't do quests AND have the compass/markers turned off. The journal is absolutely useless. Having them off only works when I'm just exploring.

I still think that's silly. I really enjoyed looking in the journal, reading what landmarks to follow/find and get to the location on my own. That was the best part of Morrowind for me.

I prefer to see my health and stamina tho...but I might give it a try

hey, i've been actually practicing with the hud off to get used to not seeing the auto-regen bars and, for me, i'm getting very used to it and much better at gauging my actual health/stamina levels (i don't use magic with this character) during combat.

stamina is purely a time issue and i just count the seconds that it takes to get to 25/50/75/100 %.
health is obviously more difficult, but, by using the blood/hazy screen/moans as my indicator i can use time without hits to estimate bar refills and experiment with different sizes of health potions (usually the 100/150 hp ones) to see how many it takes to get to 25/50/75/100%.

as well, you can guesstimate the number of times you get hit and have a decent idea where your health is.

it's tough initially, but, i'm getting much better at it and hopefully it will soon be second nature. just takes some practice.

but, the benefits of playing this way are very nice.

Good point! I completely forgot about Clairvoyance... Embarrassing considering the fact that I'm a mage... :P

this isn't for everyone, but, takes about 5 seconds to do and adds the great benefit of never having to use the quest markers or map: print out a copy of a non-detailed map of skyrim from online and when you get a location you fill it in.

this also allows you to not see locations that you feel you wouldn't be able to mark on your map. as well, you'll always still have the in-game map for those days you don't want to bother with it.

Compass does not bother me as much as others, however, I need to know where North is. I don't mind getting lost, I just need to know what direction I am walking in.

Well, at night you can navigate by http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/812/northstarskyrim.jpg/

I'm assuming no such thing.

You check your map and pick a distant landmark. As long as you're heading towards that landmark, you're heading in the right direction. It doesn't matter if you're zigzagging or anything like that. And the more often you do it, the more you learn the game world and the less often you even need to check your map.

If I know where I want to go, I now have very little difficulty getting myself into the general area. And if I'm traveling long distances, I often follow the roads. They do a very good job at getting me to where I want to go.

I'm guessing you've spent some time out in nature (the real one), hiking about before. I've spend a large chunk of my life hiking the woods and mountains, and that is exactly how ya do it out thar. Works fine in Skyrim, too.

I turned down the hud a while ago, it's just at the point if I really look I can see the crosshair's and the "take item" show up. I would be thrilled If I could just have a north, south compass and crosshair's. I play on 360 so no mods.

But I'm pretty good at dead reckoning and reading a topigraphical map in RL.

I actually had turned it all the way down, but found out that it make's looting and dialouge to much of a pain.

I can see the health bar and such, but I can't see the little red dt's for enemies.... help's that the controller vibrates when a dragon land's behind me! :twirl:

I'm actually gonna turn my HUD off for my next character - I might even start as soon as I get back to Skyrim. Immersion ftw!

As for being lost, I recall it as a good feeling back in Morrowind... you just end up in so many interesting places. After all, if you always know where you're going, you're never gonna see new places. And there's always roads and signs to follow. You DO know there are signs along the major roads, pointing towards most of the settlements, don't you?

Few people realise how many things are shoved in their faces in this game they don`t actually need and that would make their game better without it.

Nice to see you`ve discovered the freedom.

Heh, found this on reddit.

I just like to know north, south, east, and west. I hate the other "features" on the compass.

It seems to me that the more games develop, the more dumbed-down they get - it's like they hand you everything on a silver platter. The games of old were absolutely unforgiving if you messed up, and you had to figure out everything by yourself - nowadays you don't even have to try, because it's all laid out in front of you... We're gamers, not stupid!

This is why I turned the compass off. When I started playing the game, it wasn't long before I came to a realization. I was watching the compass more than I was the actual world. And why not? All of the most important information that I needed was on that little bar at the top of the screen. It told me what direction I needed to go for my current quest. It told me where all the near by points of interest were. It also told me where my enemies were, even before I could see them with my own two eyes. So the only reason I needed to look at the world was to make sure I didn't trip over a rock.

My initial intention was just to turn off everything on the compass, but leave the compass itself. But the mod I use ended up turning the whole thing off. And I have never been happier. Now, I actually have to pay attention to the game world. I also get surprised a lot more often than I ever did with the compass on.

Sorry, I think I have missed something here. If I haven't got a compass accurate enough to take bearings how would I know where on the map I am in order to fill in the location of a newly discovered place?

Without a compass when you are in the middle of nowhere, how do you know that you're going north, or south, or west, or east? Do you check the map every five steps?

The sun and moons rise in the east, set in the west, after the age-old custom.

He is assuming everyone walks in a straight line. Games tend to make me walk in circles.

This actually is true of real life. Nobody can walk in a straight line without landmarks, owing that one leg is always stronger than the other, or longer, or both. Put somebody in the desert without a compass or landmarks and they'll walk in circles.

One of my peeves about the in game compass is that it makes no real distinction about distances to landmarks. I had to go kill a giant NW of Morthal. It seemed to be right over that-a-way. Ha! Almost hiked to Solitude rounding that mountain. Another similar quest from Morthal had me finally arrive at my destination only to see, quite clearly and not far off, Whiterun!

Thanks for the tip! I'd like to turn off the compass but still keep the cross hair. Trying to pick up those damn books without one is a nightmare. Hopefully this will let me do that.
I turned off my compass using ini settings.

I still have a crosshair.

Complaints along that vein are not understood.

I'm using http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=912. At least I can keep the compass with only the cardinal points in it; any traveller needs a compass doesn't he? It also allows you to customize the map.
Same. I kept the compass on, but turned the undiscovered location markers off.
