So....What Exactly Can Followers Do?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:31 pm

I read not long ago that followers can pick up books for you. I was completely unaware of this ability. This could serve as a "readme" thread about followers for people like me who are unaware of all the things that can be done with the action command.

so far they can:

pick locks

loot corpses and containers

attack target

pick up objects

use staves

sit in chairs

assassinations with no bounty (player must stay hidden)

perform jobs (chopping wood)

Are there any other things that followers can do?

Has anyone come across away to tell them to use ranged or melee specifically?

they can also:

follow you

wait for you (until they get bored and return home)

carry your junk

there is no way to specify any strategy to be used by followers like in fallout

- Run into you.

- Stand directly in front of you while using archery.

- Block hallways.

- Use a bow when you need them to use melee.

- Use a sword when you need them to use a bow.

- Repeat the same dialogue over and over and over and over and over.

- Run for 10 miles to work their way around a 3 foot drop.

- Glitch out.

- Ruin your ability to sneak.

-Bleed on the Ebony Blade

-Stare at you while being attacked by a Draugr

-Decide they're not wearing armor anymore

-Move constantly if using them to tank so that all your spells/arrows miss

I have witnessed all of these first-hand. But they are good dragon bait on master difficulty.

one important thing to keep in mind, if your are the sneaky type, is to get a sneaky companion

knowm sneaky companions:
-faendal (early)
-jenessa (middle)
-Aela the huntress (high end)

those companions can even do thing like sneak-run (rolls) like you do
It all depend on what level they are and what perks they got at that leve;

hopefully bethesda will fix the level up thing
until then, stick with faedal until you are ready to upgrade
(avoid meeting jenessa)
I think aela is set to be high level anyway
but if you take a route to avoid you, she may spawn at higher level latter

things I wish they could do:
-learn spells when you give them spell books

but they can use staves

staves added. i forgot about that and a bonus is that they seem to last longer with companions even if they arent mage companions.

You can force a companion to melee or range by controlling what weapons they are allowed to hold.

You can ask them to search a container and sit in a chair. I like the chair one so they're not blocking the doorway in the house and you can go to sleep without someone standing over you. I think you can ask them to cook something too but I haven't done that one myself. :tes:

You can have them kill someone for you with no bounty reprecussions if you order them to and you're hidden when they begin the attack.

I have never yet got a Follower to search a body, even when they`re carrying almost nothing. I can`t get them to do something like sleep then sleep myself, it don`t work.

I did get one to do the cooking, well she don`t make anything, but meh.

Pretty useless compared to great Follower Mods of Morrowind, Oblivion and FO3.

You can get them to chop wood for you, and it's a bit faster than doing it yourself, since you don't have to reposition the cursor everytime. I had Faendal do it for a whole ingame day (dawn till dusk) and made like 800 gold. Nothing like taking credit for other people's hard labor!

I have had all of these Happen to me they need a follower equip feature to make followers equip and use certain items it would also help Roleplay also, they need followers to lvl up with you skillwise and damagewise they become useless
