You can follow the main quest...or not, but I think the best advice I can give anyone starting a fallout game, is Give it a fair chance, put an hour or 2 into it and you'll then say "ahh 15 more minutes, and be up until 4am mowing down hot pockets and drink in an attempt to stay awake.

The Main quest should take around 20-30 hours? I'd say, idk if someone has a more accurate timeframe, but the real glory is all the side quests and exploring of the game! I'll easily Put over 300 hours in.

This. There is also the fact that you have a great deal of choices in how you do quests and your actions have consequences. Then you have the exploration, the story, huge array of weapons, interesting characters, gambling, weapon mods, crafting, followers and a great deal of other things. Just give the game a chance. :tops:

Western Style RPG? Linear? You have it all wrong friend. Fallout: NV is a open-world or "sandbox" style, post-apocalyptic themed RPG. It's as open as they get. You'll be able to wander off to anywhere the wind blows or seek out quests from the people you meet to lead you places. It is probably moderately hard to learn; as I remember my first time with FO3 being a little tough because I wasn't used to playing games that limited resources and supplies so much.

Judging by your avatar you're a Halo fan so this game might be a bit slower for you, but that's what the game is about. Steady progression, character development, and exploration. You won't be walking around guns blazing as much as you will be cautiously venturing into dark buildings searching for food/water and ammo. If you have a decent amount of patience I think you can learn to love the game. Hope you like it man!

Well its definitely not linear. In fact try not to get overwhelmed by the shear amount of content. Hey., at least its not an Elder Scrolls game, then you'd be [censored] my friend.

If you aren't familiar with Fallout 3 or The Elder Scrolls, then you're in for a unique game. This game's environment is far from linear. There's a huge game world to explore. There are no invisible walls preventing you from going anywhere. You have miles upon miles of terrain to explore, filled with hundreds of locations to go to and dozens of quests to complete. With Fallout 3, for example, the biggest fans can play for hundreds of hours without getting bored, there's that much to do. I myself played it for more than 300 hundreds hours, or 8 months straight, before getting bored, and I expect New Vegas will provide the same amount of entertainment, if not more. If you really like this game, you'll be amazed how you could have possibly spent $60 on other games out there that only last 10-20 hours.

The actual main quest in Fallout 3 was very linear, but in New Vegas you'll have plenty of choices to make and factions to side with. It wont be linear at all.

Everything above + I got into RPGs when I got Fallout 3 and before that I played FPSs, racing games, etc. Trust me, the experience you get from a RPG is amazing, especially from Fallout where it's very unique and fun. It's not linear and you are in a very big world that offers many possibilities.

^^^ pretty much this. except for FO3 it took about 3-4 hours of gameplay and all of a sudden i was hooked and couldnt stop. also, if New Vegas is anything like Fallout 3 then i'd guess the main story with limited side-quests would be more like 50-60 hours.

so like others are saying, give it a chance. you may not find it all that enjoyable in the first hour or 2 but once you get the hang of things and start leveling up & exploring you probly won't be able to put the control down.

Aside from what I already said, a lot of linear games are like watching a movie, much like halo's reach. Was a good game, but the single player didn't last long, but that's ok because the multiplayer is the core element. But fallout is an adventure. Once you are playing the game for awhile you'll find something epic, and that will lead only to more epicness.

Below = Quest Description
A good example from fallout 3 would be...
Spoiler
"I think" the super duper mart quest. It's nothing like your ordinary first quest in video games, it's not some tutorial to get you used to combat or something. (though your "first quest" is also a choice. but most people did this early on) You're looking for food to scavenge for the quest so the quest giver can write about it in the "wasteland survival guide" and once you enter the super duper mart, you notice that it has 5-6 raiders in it, and you get no "Listen champ, what you need to do is.." radio pvssyr, you're on your own. personally I grabbed the food right away without being seen (sneak character) and then you get the Optional quest tag and you can also find medical supplies to report to the quest giver about, however that is on the other side of the store (unknown at the time) and through the raiders. A short while later (robot jumps out of a cake...figuratively speaking of course :D) and you exit the store, then "sometimes" a boy will approach you can ask for help with his town, leading to a whole new adventure, often times you'll have a Ton of stuff to do because getting side-tracked is easy, but unlike most games, getting side-tracked in Fallout isn't a bad thing! it's one of the BEST things.

After you've spent a long time on the game, or at least beaten it once, (on PC) you can also MOD the game, which is also awesome.

Edit: after reading what I wrote, it made me really want to play NV now >.< damnit!

And remember that you can totally ignore the Main Quest indefinitely. A Fallout is, IMO, mainly about exploration. Finding the fun stuff the devs put in. Finding that "ZOMG!!!" area or that "FTW???" encounter. Remember the subtitle of the Scarface game? "The World is Yours" is very true for a Fallout game

one of my "OMG" moments was walking into the yao guai tunnels for the first time, and witnessing that former black bear lunge past the open passage. It took me like 30 minutes to fully clear that area the first time because I was sneaking and careful and had no idea what a dart gun was at the time lol!

I wish I could recapture that moment of walking into the store and not really knowing that in my hand was one of the greatest RPG's I was ever going to play again. I sure do miss that feeling.

It's too late now, with release being next week, but if you had more time I would suggest getting and playing through Fallout 1, then Fallout 2, ignore Fallout 3 and then play New Vegas and pretend that it is called Fallout 3.

Hi, I am a Fallout Noob like my name suggests. I've never played any fallout before but i watched my friend play fallout 3 awhile back and it was pretty cool. I guess my question is, Is it okay to play Fallout New Vegas even though I've never played any of the past games? Will it take away from my experience since I don't know anything behind the storyline? Fill me in guys cuz I am a newb!

A bit of the fallout backstory (the nuclear war between China and the US, the Enclave, the Brotherhood of Steel, what Ghouls are and what Supermutants are) is probably all you need to know. Mostly everything that goes on in New Vegas will be explained by the characters as you go along, so in that respect it is a standalone game. Not knowing the backstory won't take away your enjoyment of the game, but will certainly add to it if you spend some time looking it up (try the Vault wiki: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Fallout - that will not only give you backstories to the games, but give you an idea of how complex and rich they actually are. Mind-blowing, at times.)

I read up on some of the different factions and creatures I will encounter but I definitely will check out that wiki site you suggested. Thanks so much for the reply.

Can you give me your opinion on what groups you will side whith if you don't mind? ;-)
