Now Playing Europa Universalis 3. I played as The Kingdom of England, and managed to conquer all of Ireland in a year, however my invasion of Scotland along with Portugal didn't go to well, Portugal briefly occupied the west coast while I sacked half the cities in Scotland, but they had too many troops, so we had to call a truce.
Then France, Burgundy, Castile and a crapload of tiny nations declared war on me while there were peasant's revolts up and down the country, my armies overstretched, Scotland conquered all of northern and eastern England, Wales and Ulster declared independence, France conquered Lancashire and Munster and Castile conquered Portugal and took over western Ireland.
By the time I'd convinced Scotland to guarantee our existence, We had control only over Gloucester. Oxford and Wessix.
The historical essays you get at the end are haunting. Imagine England today being only in the limited Southern part of Britain, with Scotland extending as far south as East Anglia. And Ireland under Spanish rule!
Still, I think I understand the gameplay now. Don't overstretch yourself and don't treat the Continentals like it's the mid 19th century where they don't matter.
I also like how the game makes assumptions about your knowledge of the world. In the tutorial it tells you to send colonists to take over Cuba, from Lisbon. It does not suggest where that might be. I like to think there were a few hapless people wandering around the Indian ocean in their ships, looking for Latin America.
