I don't think it's ever explained...to my knowledge the only things we know are on the terminals in the vault, all of which address the experiment there.

Given the nature of the experiment, two groups being segregated, paranoia being induced etc and the knowledge of what happens in most vaults...it's probably a good bet that they killed eachother and the survivors fled. No lock on the door, so to speak.

However this demands the knowledge of what happened then? There are no, to my knowledge, vault 19 jumpsuits outside of it, no references, nothing. Perhaps it was shortly after the war, in which case all would be long gone.

Basically, it seems to be a guessing game, I don't know of any source which has info on the vault other than the in game information.

"The purpose of Vault 19 in the Vault Experiment was a "social experiment". This involved the segregation of the vault dwellers into two different colored sections (red and blue), with limited contact.

The main purpose of the experiment, as explained in notes found on terminals scattered throughout the vault, was to cause paranoia through non-chemical and non-violent means. Subliminal messaging was almost certainly a factor, as a child states on his terminal he was hearing high-pitched voices, and so were his friends. Other terminal entries written by advlts state that they were feeling and thinking things that they normally didn't think, such as being more aggressive, etc. Ironically, they blamed this on the opposing color group, instead of the true culprits, the Overseers.

Vault 19 is also unique in having two Overseers (one for Red, one for Blue), each with their own office." ~ The Vault's words

Maybe the Fire Gecko's got them in the Living Quarters, and survivors just left and didn't talk about it or something.

Meh, maybe they engaged in civil war. Red vs. Blue. Maybe after the battles, the Geckos came in the unlocked vault and killed the remaining inhabitants. That's my theory.
