What happens if you start a new mod and edit a vanilla scrip

Do you over-write it or does the CK make an instant back-up?

Don't want to touch anything until I know first.

Compiled scripts are in a BSA (the misc one, I think), so you don't need to worry about losing the original. Source files aren't backed up automatically, although you can restore them by using Steam's "Verify Integrity of Local Tool Cache" functionality, in the properties window for the Creation Kit.
