sometimes I name my stuff beginning W/my char name. But it is always best to name them so they line up in terms of usage, like smithing for instance.
Merentin's smithing armor
Merentin's smithing gloves
etc.
This way they are easy to find when you change clothes.
Then I might need to put a version #:
Merentin's smithing armor v1.0
Merentin's smithing gloves v1.0
for when I upgrade the stuff.

But this is only really relevant for wearables.

I like to enchant my weapons based on what the weapon is, and then name my weapons based on the enchantment. Like right now I have a 1H Glass axe with 10 Frost damage, so I named it the Frostshear. I like artifact-y names.

I like to have it be RP related and related to the effect of the items itself. I also have enchanted a pair of steel plate gauntlets with increased 2-handed damage and named them the Fists of Radagulf which is an artifact from Morrowind.

RP: Something related to the characters past or family for example: Lachance Amulet.

I name mine depending upon what I enchant them with. I usually use a simple prefix: Sturdy for stuff that enhances health or stamina in some way, Comfortable for stuff that aids carry weight, Mage's for stuff that adds magicka or reduces spell cost, Warrior's for 1H, 2H or Block enchantments, that sort of thing. For weapons, I generally do the same: Shocking, Flaming, Icy, Bloody (for absorb health), Scary (for Fear and Banish), etc. However, early-game items usually get a suffix instead (Ring of the Mule, Necklace of the Firewalker, etc).

I save the 'good' names for my top-of-the-line stuff (like what LimeSheep said about 'artifact-y' names).

If I'm enchanting follower's gear, I use their name as a prefix (Benor's Gloves, Jenassa's Bow, etc).

I have many names for your bows :shifty: (If you hate fun then don't open the spoiler)

Spoiler

The Guardsmen's Bane
Ye Old Knee Crusher
Adventure Ender
The start to a Guardsmen Career

I could do this all day :teehee:

Use a lot of words like ancient, old, "inset name"'s "inset weapon type, armor type", call things with a frost enchantment "The Old Ice Queen's "thing name"" and so on.

My character's name is Demonbane (yes, after the anime of the same name, because it's awesome). Anytime I craft a new weapon, it's Demonbane [item]. I do this because it keeps all my stuff grouped together so I don't accidentally sell it. The best thing is Skyrim allows for duplicate names, so there's no reason to go into elaborate names.

My first char has a Big ''fluffing' Sword and Bow selecta!
Now I just name all my Armour after my chars names so they are all next to eachother in the inventory.

Here are some ideas:

Dwemer boots of the pack mule - Fortify Carry Weight boots
Hands of the golem -Fortify Magicka/Magicka regen gauntlets
Soulsvcker- Basically any weapon with a Soul trap enchant on it.

Some people tend to name items after the creature/person whose soul they used for it.
