What do I need to upgrade to effectively run FO:NV?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:46 am

Hello everybody. Normally when I'm going to get a game, I utilize systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI (Can You Run It?). However due to issues with it's program telling me I could run an open-world game, Borderlands, and then having Borderlands not work for my computer, along with hearing it's program isn't very accurate, I've decided to stop and do not know of another program to use to figure out if I should get a game or not.

I currently have Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3 for the PlayStation 3, but I prefer PC gaming, especially due to the ability to modify games. My computer can run games like Portal and Left 4 Dead 2 with pretty good graphics, but it seems to have issues with running open world games, like Borderlands. Before I decide to buy New Vegas for the PC, I would like to know what I need to upgrade, recommended replacements, etc. I also ask that what you provide is more than just the minimum. I don't want to go and shell out several hundred dollars renovating my PC for a single game, only to find the next game I get won't work on this system. If you can also figure out why my computer can't run open-world games effectively, that'd be great too. Thanks! Anyways, here's the dxdiag of my system:

Source engine games like Portal are more CPU bound than Unreal engine games like Borderlands. While the whole system starting to get a bit creaky in general, the best quick fix for it would be a new graphics card.

I wouldn't bother going higher than a mid range card like a Radeon 5650 or GeForce 460 with that cpu, but you'll see a big improvement in performance with one of those cards in. The only other question is if your power supply could take them. Is this a store bought system? Can you get the case open and see if the PSU specs are writen down on it for us?

It's your video card, no doubt about it. Google "Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart " to see where your card , Nvidia 8600GT, places in comparison to other more powerful cards. As you can see, it's quite low compared to even my video card which is no spring chicken (ATI HD 3850 512MB), but seems to run New Vegas decently. If I were you I would start looking at nothing less than an HD 3850 or equivalent and move up from there as your budget allows.

My other computer has a GeForce GT 220, which according to the graphics card heirarchy chart is at the same level as the HD 3850. Would that be adequate for New Vegas?

I think it would run pretty decently on medium settings, give it a try! As long as you don't push the resolution and graphic settings too far I think it will be adequate and look pretty good as well.

The only major difference between your system and mine (which runs on ultra), is a $150 video card. Get yourself a high rated ATI card from newegg.com.

Don't listen to anyone who says you need more RAM. With WinXP 32bit, your computer is capped at 4GB including graphics card RAM.
