What quest does the "Steel Greatsword of Sapping" go

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 7:11 pm

I have this quest in my journal that says "Collect the bounty from Skald" and it's the only one that I can't find the objective. I also can't set it as a tracked quest.

Either way, I went in the cave and got the sword but I forgot what quest it was for.

The cave was South side of the mountain seperating the N and S just below the college and Dawnstar and that part. It had a Drauger boss with a secret door that had an alchemy table at the end. At the beginning there were a couple of snow bears and the dungeon turned from snowy white and ice to the browny dungeon look.

Are you sure it's a quest item? It looks like a generic enchanted sword to me...

Your description is totally vague. The only dungeons I can think of that are inhabited by draugr in that region are Forsaken Cave and Saarthal. The first has a Word Wall and the second is connected with the College of Winterhold; pretty easy things to remember, so maybe it's some other cave.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Alchemy_Labs a list of all alchemy tables in Skyrim, it might help you locate the place.

Bounty turn-ins to Skald are bugged according to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Skald.

If the quest is updated 'Collect Bounty' it would indicate you have done whatever it is you needed to do, and to return to Skald. Bounties are to kill leaders of hideouts like briarhearts or bandit leaders. The weapon you described just sounds like a normal in game levelled chest reward.

One way to tell if an item is needed is to try and drop it, the game won't let you drop any quest items (even before you get a quest belonging to an item).

Sometimes you can find a "Treasure Hunter's note" that will direct you to a low-level magic item in a random dungeon. My level 40-ish character had one such quest to find the all-powerful, amazing, one-of-a-kind Iron Warhammer of Shocks (oh my!) in Illinata's Deep.

Just to note though that I once received that exact item you mention (Steel Greatsword of Sapping) as a reward for becoming Thane (think it was Maven that gave it to me).

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a quest in my journal that says something about "Steel Greatsword of Sapping". Come to think of it I don't remember seeing it in my journal, but only on my map.

I think it was from Skald only the quest didn't register or something.

I think he said something about getting the sword that belonged to his town or something....or whoever gave me the quest said it.

Can you go into the game and check the name of the dungeon? If it's connected to a radiant quest then the UESP would probably show which one(s).

A "Steel Greatsword of Sapping" is a generic weapon though, so if you don't have any current objectives talking about it, I doubt that it's a quest item.

The "job for the Jarl" you get from Skald is to kill a giant. Bounties given in Dawnstar would be to kill something that is a danger to the hold, not likely that you'd get a fetch quest as a bounty as already noted. If you've got an objective telling you to collect a bounty from someone you just go and collect it, there's usually not a special item involved that you have to find and return.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the quest you get from the Jarl of Winterhold? His special "job" is to retrieve the Helm of Winterhold from some random location. It's an artifact once worn by the Jarls of the hold but long considered lost. As far as I know Skald does not send you on any fetch quests, but the Jarl of Winterhold does as the first thing you do for him.

That sounds like the note on the dead treasure hunter random encounter.

If it was from that random encounter indeed, then you didn't need to bring it to anyone. Misc quest ended as soon as you picked up the item.

I avoid picking up those notes for that reason, especially since the note itself is a quest item. :stare:
