What 'quirks' would you give your character, IF you could?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:38 am

After looking at some awesome concept art, I got quite the thrill of excitement when I saw concept art of a Soldier with a fiery cigar bristling from his beard. It would be awesome if the character customization system had a function that could add habitual actions to characters; this could finish the job of giving a character its one-of-a-kind personality, especially if you consider the thousands of unique permutations you could derive from just one habit and a multitude of character builds.

Well, this is where you come in, folks; will there be such a function in Brink, would it be a good idea to implement one if there isn't at present, and what kinds of habits would you really want for your characters? I myself know for certain I'd want my characters to either smoke (cigars or cigarettes), chew gum, or have facial twitches (people who pre-ordered the game with the Psycho customization pack, take note!).

EDIT: At the VERY VERY least, could the facial expression of your character be customized as well?

Oh, and two more questions; is it possible and would you like to customize your eye colour and one of your eyes with false eyes or eye patches, and what character from other media would you try to recreate with character customization?
Fat Man from MGS2: Sons of Liberty is top of my list, as a bald head, sharp (but not aquiline) nose, small brown eyes, small nose, wide clean-shaven face, heavy build, and Security 'The Bomb' armor will do for his visage and dress. High-level soldier and engineer skills and attributes will emulate his skills and hand grenades, the Hockler machine pistol, and a grenade launcher ought to be fitting armaments. To top it off, a cultivated but snide voice with a Chicago accent would be best for him.
Snake's second, but he'll be a bit harder unless mullet haircuts, full bodysuits, and knotted cloth head bands are available.

I've seen characters with one colorless, scarred eye.

I myself know for certain I'd want my characters to either smoke (cigars or cigarettes)

To the tune of a thousand raging yuppies, I heartily agree with ya here.

EDIT: Just thought of this, and it's a little bit unrelated, but what if your character spoke in his native language (provided he's not American or British) during non-critical pvssyr?
You give your Russian-accented teammate a health buff and he'll say spasiba! ...Or however the hell you say thank you in Russian...

I really like that idea! :celebration:

It'll be like in TF2 where like the Medic says a lot of German words to express where he's from.

I wounder what all of the accents are because I heard there are like 8 different types.

I don't know about quirks so much, but customizable...err...accessories, I guess, would be nice. We already get things like sunglasses and stuff, but things like cigars, toothpicks, different colored eyes, etc. would be nice as well.

A customizable default expression would be neat too, I think. Better than having everyone wearing the same grim scowl 24/7 eh? That might just come with your face though... :homestar:

Serious trenchcoaty guy like Richard Deckard. And a a Duke Nukem clone. Otherwise I'll spend time playing dress up doll to see what unique combinations suit me.

Depends, will a LMG in a constant fire count as a lightsaber? If it does then yes, but it will be the fat Obi Wan cosplayer you see sometimes.

I so want to say Alex Mercer right now, with the 'quirk' being the ability to regenerate from anything,

Spoiler
...even a nuclear blast.

I do like the languages thing that Red Shift said though.

No we are not having different colored eyes!

But eyepatches would be neat and sunglasses as well(in game already anyway) as long as there are a decent pair of aviators

I've heard Russian and Somalian mentioned by Richard Ham in one of the interviews - both of those can be heard in the container city vids.
...And then there's whatever the hell the character that was being played in the IGN demo. I dunno what kind of accent that is but its awesome.

EDIT: Somehow quoted myself. Damn I'm good.

I would love the idea of having special quirks for your character. It would help give him some character that the creator wants....like smoking.

Heh? That's the queerest response I've had so far. I don't suppose you'd like to clarify it?

Hm, and that would make eye colour customization impractical? I have no idea what you're driving at.

it was a joke, and i hope you mean the formal definition of queer lol although there are no women in the game so to be a nympho... yeah... but anyway yeah it was just a joke. i wonder if in addition to accent theres voice depth or something, or will all the americans (for example) sound the same?

The only info known on this is the option to choose the accent but they never said thats the only voice customization theyll have so well just have to wait.

If possible during cutscenes(if character is shown...which would be odd if he wasnt) have him twirling a cigar in his fingers

at end mission cut scenes show him lighting it up

Hahahahaha! I know what you're talking about, but I just don't see that happening that often. Especially not if they limited it to realistic eye colors, like blue, green, brown, and gray. Hmm...wacky contacts could be cool though. Who wants their guy to have snake eyes?
