The best thing is to look over the patch notes and see if any of it interests you. If you're happy with the game as-is I wouldn't worry about it. I played my mage pre-1.4 and my thief mostly on 1.4 and I haven't noticed anything different.

Hopefully there will be a 1.5 and beyond. Keep the patches coming, until Skyrim is 100% bug free.

Reason for 1.4? Game stability for one.

Fixed issue with ash piles not cleaning up properly.

Good enough for me, especially after using Bane of the Undead so much.

I'm sure there's a list of the 1.4 fixes around here somewhere.

They've said that Skyrim will see continous patches and updates, so I assume that 1.5 is a safe bet.

As I want to do and see as much as possible before I'm done with my Nord character, anything that keeps quests from possibly breaking is good in my book.

The patch fixed a few nasty quest problems as far as I've seen. For me, on the 360, it's added some silly cosmetic issues and bizarre NPC behaviours but the pros have so far outweighed the cons.

I play on PC. I get random game crashes every so often. I save frequently and have a pretty quick computer so it's really not much of a bother to me. But that doesn't change the fact that it's a problem. And it really isn't always related to stressing my computer's system either. For example, sometimes I will be walking through a cleared cave, so it's just me an the cave and the cave atmosphere. I wouldn't think that would be enough to cause the game to crash but it happens. And it never happens in the same place twice. So, it's a random game crash. The patch has fixed some of the issue that cause this but not all. I imagine it's a rather tough fix. So, I would recommend getting all the patches as they come out. You can always backup your stuff if you're worried a patch will screw you over. But, for the most part, they are totally worth while. The 1.4 patch didn't make much difference to me, but then again, if they do things right you really aren't supposed to notice anything, you are supposed to just have fewer problems. And since I didn't have many problems in the first place the patches don't affect my gameplay much, if any at all.

You know the answer already

It depends if your game has been stable at whatever patch you have and what your plugins are.If you've never had a ctd problem or a bug or a save file corruption then sweet don't bother, for some who have updated to 1.4 they have had nothing but problems but i think the majority has found it has fixed 70% of their problems.

but there's no way to get 1.4 without going through steam

I'm personally not going to upgrade until the last patch comes out, don't want another repeat of 1.2.

I've had numerous texture problems since 1.4, particularly the shading of objects on characters and in the inventory, as well as some weird lighting issues (arcane enchanters and glowing weapons).

1.4 update is our most significant update to date.

We will be releasing a 1.5. When there's more details, we'll share them here in the forums and on the blog.

I don`t understand. You ask what reasons there are for 1.4 then in the post you ask if there will be a 1.5.

Which question are you actually asking?

Edit: Oh well Gstaff understands.

1.04 fixes almost every low to moderate problems we had and a few major ones. I have yet to see any negativity from it aside from my Ghostblade disappearing from my rack above Breezehome entrance. Some bastard probably stole that though, so I am extra cautious about my things -- I check them almost every half hour now

My ash piles clean up some of the time but there have been a few that have remained forever after 1.4.

Blood on the Ice works now, it seems these patches have only been truly fixing the quest bugs.

I am thinking about removing my patch because either 1.2 or 1.3 broke my enemy and ingredient respawns.

With 1.0 and 1.1 they both worked fine. I played about a hundred hours with no respawn issues.
