What role will karma play

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:06 am

I know that there will be be no bad or good view of things, but reputation. But if im not mistaking karma will still be in NV, right? What role will it play, how will it effect the game? I'm guessing that some people you meet will like you more if you're a good person or you will get diffrent dialogue and able to join some type of city gang if you're a bad karma person?

Maybe it will still affect titles (as in radio hosts "nickname") for your character? I don't know to be honest.

Hopefully in just very small ways and rarely affect you with certain characters or quests. And I mean RARELY.

I think it'll be your general good/evil rating in the wasteland, and people will acknowledge you as being either good, evil or in between as with FO3. What will be different is that there will also be reputation.
So I think that it'll kind of be along the lines of "Hey, you're an evil bastard who does all kinds of terrible stuff, but you saved my little town from raiders so you're OK with me."
Just my take on things I guess.

There has to be something that's based on Karma. Why would they just throw in as stat with no purpose?

Karma is thought of as "the way you see yourself as opposed to the way people see you', Jason Bergman says this in one of his interviews; he said that it will be needed for some perks but other than that characters won't really react to you because of your karma.

Karma is back, but now incorporated alongside a reputation system, similar to Fallout 2.[2] Reputation is a form of tracking relationships within the factions and towns of Fallout: New Vegas, such as the NCR or Goodsprings, a high reputation with a faction or town may give certain benefits, such as gifts from the people of that town, while a low reputation may lead to hits being taken out against you. Karma in New Vegas will have very little effect compared to Fallout 3 as reputation will decide how people react to you.

I hope there will be a few karma specific dialogue choices in certian places, it'd be nice to give everything in the game a full use.

The thing about karma is that it shouldn't be well known; it's a spiritual alignment indicator. Your reputation is what people will acknowledge in New Vegas; your karma is your true colors and not many people will see those unless you go around shooting everyone indiscriminately.

Well I mean it's like this. If Mr. New Vegas tells about what you do out there in the Mojave, then people could know that way, and I'm sure if you save Primm or Goodsprings and the like, word slowly gets around you know? So hence I think Karma could unlock some dialogue, but ONLY in limited places. So it isnt like:

You encounter Caesar

You're being bad, stop it. >Okay I'll stop being bad
Dialogue
Dialogue
Dialogue

Just something to indicate some people can just tell you're a good person.

I want it to play a minor role in FNV because in fallout 3 it wasent even used correctly. If you stole anything even without anyone seeing you do it then you were evil and everyone knew it. You could become a slaver simply by stealing things from an abandoned house it made no sense what so ever.

As stated before I suppose its best classified as a way for the player to look at themselves
along with being needed for specific perks

Why rarely? The bigger difference it makes, the more replay value there is.

Reputation - what people think of you
Karma - what you think about yourself
...just my guess

the impresion I got a while back was you can be an evil heartless sob, but the faction you want to work with will be saying things like

"Glad your on our side" "yes hes a murding sonofableep but hes OUR murdering soneofableep!"

Oh thank god!! Bethesda really screwed up with karma in fallout 3, they totally misunderstood what the system was supposed to represent. -__- I'm so glad Obsidian is driving this time.

I remember reading somewhere that Karma will impact your game much less. Less people will magically know you karma, and its more about Reputation. Can't link the source though - I read and watch so many previews and interviews that I can't remember what I learned where.

EDIT - Wow I got epically ninja'd....by a whole day. Gotta start reading the WHOLE thread before posting.... lol

for me karma should only affect perks and maybe give you a extra dialog option or two, but the rest should be done by rep.

Why would karma affect an NPC's opinion about you at all?
Gut feeling?
So everyone has karma bellies perk?

I agree 100% with the addition of radio comments. Like GNR on F3.

it sounded more like it was a faction based reputation system. rather than a "good" or "bad" karma that applied to everyone it sounded like it was more a faction by faction view of the world. like if one faction loves you then you are on another's [censored] list. so you get in good with cesars legion or whatever then the N.C.R. hate you and will issue a shoot on site order on you. kinda like the regulators V.S. talon company in fallout 3 but either a whole lot more people gunning for your scalp.
