Sometimes that will break any later quest you pick up. Sometimes it doesn't.

I've picked up quest items before I actually got the quest. When that happens, you just speak to the person again and give them the item. There are some areas of caves and such that are inaccessable until the quest is started.

Ronin, some quests will be permanently borked if you pick things up first - like the instruments for the Bard's College quests. The Dragonstone seems to be exempt. Other things, not so much.

? Where did I (or anyone....) say not to fast travel?

@Serethil, your right, I do remember that happening with a flute or somthing on one of my characters with the bards college.

It's all three of them (well, they *might* have fixed it in the latest patch, but I take no chances now....)

Well.... there are only 2 of us replying to your thread (me Serethil, and Ronin20). Neither of us said a word about fast travel. So where in Nirn are you getting that from, and why would it have ANYTHING germane to add to this thread?

The bottom line is: if you clear supposedly "randomly placed" dungeons in this game, you will later discover that questlines associated with said dungeons are now not completable.

So.... do so at your own risk. AFAIK from 15 toons and well over 300 hours played, there are almost NO "random" dungeons. Most places on the map have quests associated.

ETA: Case in point in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1326255-help-laid-to-rest-quest-not-working/

Ah, much better. Not sure what happened there, but all I saw was unparseable junk!

Okay, well.... I dunno what people say not to fast travel, but personally I've never had any issues with it. Fast travel doesn't crap your game; clearing dungeons before you get the associated quests is what trashes it. Right now, without the CK and people who know how to take the game files apart, there's no real way to know if a supposedly "random" place on the map has a quest associated with it (unless you go all anol and use the wiki BEFORE you enter).

So - to me, what needs to happen is that one shouldn't enter anywhere without sufficient research.

The Bard's College quest items seem to glitch for me no matter what. Not picking up a certain necklace in Windhelm as it seems to glitch for me as well.

I agree,I try and remember what areas have what items so I don't go there by mistake with my next play through.Hopefully this will be the next glitch they work on,or are working on.Quest glitches in general seem to be a huge issue for me.I still have Misc quest, that I completed close to the start of the game,in my Quest menu.

"without sufficient research"

So 'DONT' wander around and 'Do' fast travel??? if you dont have sufficient research.

Fast travel has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. I'm completely unable to fathom what your issue with fast travel is.... All you need to do is use the wiki to check where you're at before you go into a named dungeon.

Usually if you get a quest to go somewhere you already cleared, it helps to wait 30 or so in-game days to make sure the place respawned. This isn't foolproof, but it does help to avoid bugs.

Some people think that fast travel "ruins" the game because it "breaks immersion" --meaning they prefer a more realistic mode of travel. They prefer to explore naturally. The trouble with this is that often if you've cleared a place before being sent to it, it will cause the quest to bug. The choice is yours, really, about how you choose to experience the game, if you think the risk of quest bugs is worth the fun of exploring (depending on how fun you think exploring is). [Personally, I think it's perfectly reasonable in a fantasy setting that my character is able to teleport to places she knows the location of, but a lot of people in General Discussion appear to disagree. To each his own.]

All true, Ver... but fast travel is NOT THE ISSUE. You can WALK all over the damn map, and still clear dungeons before you get the relevant quests!

Yep. Probably more likely that way too.

I like to combine them... Sometimes just walk around exploring, but not going in anywhere, just discovering it in case I get a quest there later I can fast travel to it. I don't actually enter any caves or anything, because I don't want to mess up quests.

Honestly I don't understand a single damn thing the Op is talking about. Where the hell is he getting fast travel from?

He's talking about how people on the board discuss never using fast travel because you miss out on all the "random" events that happen and exploring random tombs and what not.

I would say to skip Broken Helm Hallow till you get the quest to find the old lady's son.

I would also not pick up Finn's Lute, Pantea's Flute, or Rjorn's Drum unless you have the quest for them. They are pretty goofed up to begin with.

Exactly. Someone with serious interests in the RP aspects of this game is quite likely to not use it because in her mind, it breaks the RP immersion. But fast travel does NOT break the game, nor does it have ANYTHING to do with why the OP can't finish a quest he already screwed the pooch over because he cleared a dungeon before picking up the related quest!

Well, yes. We know that. But the OP seems to think that fast travel is why he can't get quests sorted when he's already cleared a quest-associated dungeon. Apples and horse-turds....

Well, fast travel tends to not trigger the Blood on the Ice quest. Course about everything breaks it so...

Oh so true. But really, that's practically the only "documented" case where fast travel will cause quest breakage. In the case of the multitude of dungeons in this game, the only thing that causes "borkedness" is the failure to check to see if a quest is associated with a particular dungeon before going on a killing spree.
