I won't know really until I have the game and am playing it.
Who I ally with depends on what my character knows, how I've been playing, previous events, what the faction offers, and how I'm feeling at the time.

Well, NCRep is mostly the army, while NCRan is like the special ops.

Yup.
But some will have longer quest-lines than others.
House/NVPD, Caesars Legion and NCR are the top three.
Then comes the second tier which most likely include BOS.
And lastly comes third tier which might just be a background faction. (Speculating that Jackals are pretty small faction)

Wow, that's great... I guess the question should be which one I'm going to join first? I really have no Idea and probably won't until I encounter each one in game. Then I'll make my decision(s).

Scottish and proud of it, if there was a kilt in Fallout: New Vegas, Id wear it, and wear it with pride. No honestly, there should be a kilt in there, like a William Wallace DLC equipment set, Claymore would be sick in Fallout!!!!!! XD

what I'm doing pretty much, but from the overview my first character will have a hard decision between NCR and CL.

Hes an explorer and learned from some tribals, so he might hold some feelings for the tribals in CL, but he thinks the NCR are doing an alright job of brnging some trade and law to the wasteland. He will see if their is a possible solution to stop this conflict(probrably fail miserably)
