Blackreach?

What's its purpose and how is it connected to a vast variety of different dungeons?

Why and how does this amazingly huge zone affect the game, if any?
Does it hide treasures? Quests? Ancient history or important NPCs?

It's literally too large to sniff around, isn't it?

I've been there twice, always through a dungeon.

I mean, is there a direct route to Blackreach or is it only accessible through dungeons and all that?

I got so many questions concerning this zone, but to boil it all down:

What is up with Blackreach? Really?

There's two quests that takes you into Blackreach, and another you can get while there. Iirc.

You can find some "express elevators" down there that will take you directly to the surface, and back. Look for exits that says "to Skyrim" on the handle.

I'm aware of all that.

But is that it?

It is handy if you're into poisons as it's the only source of crimson nirnroot. it's also the only place to mine the geode veins for soul gems.

other than that you can fus ro dah the big orange globe that hangs from the ceiling to fight a dragon

it's a neat big area to explore, but that's about it.

I suspect it was some kind of Dwemer capital and maybe a religious site for them to make pilgrimages. As Throndar mentioned there are Geode Veins that yield Soul Gems. There are quite a few adjoining zones with chests. Also, there's a quest that starts down there with a pretty good reward for Alchemists.

Blackreach is fun, but fairly barren of mobs (not always a bad thing....) It's hard to see in there.... so I don't spend more time there than necessary to do the quest series. It's too bad the lighting is so horrible.

I turn up the brightness on my setting's, I have a very hard time seeing down there. It's the one place I do turn the settings up, usually I have the slider at 1/3 in their I turn it up to a little over half....sometimes higher.

Next time I'm in there I'm going to rest somewhere overnight and see if sunrise happens as some have posted....

Last time I was in Blacksreach, I never rested because my werewolf orc didn't need to bother. Never saw sunrise or any sun at all, really. Just the same old, same old the two or three days I was there.

Blackreach is my summer getaway. My Nord lady loves that place! I love picking off Falmer thralls in the Dwemer Debate Hall. I also like the giant that stomps around down there.
