What's up with that leather strap thingy on that almost awes

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 2:49 am

I apologise in advance on my lack-of-understand with regards to this weapon design, but am I the only one who feels that the leather strap above the steel greatsword handle totally disfigured what could be the "best" looking greatsword in the game?

It's so that you can grip the sword without chafing your hand on the steel handle.

It's there to be used as an extra place to hold, farther up the blade. When using a greatsword most of the swings are sluggish compared to one handed weapons, to counter act this the leather wrap was added to shorten the swords swing for a faster but less powerful slash when needed. Basically that how they used to make claymores like that, beth just added it to mimic those looks.

i'm not sure what strap you're referring to, don't remember any straps above the handle. i am quite fond of the steel greatsword and do consider it the best looking weapon in the game. of course it looks like a complete rip off of conan's sword (Arnold version).

Stabilization for thrust kill with the 2nd hand. To be sure it doesn't deflect, but pierces and penetrates.

To absorb harsh vibration while blocking.

Lol, I don't know, I'm guessing.

He's reffering to the second leather piece above the main guard. I think it has a technical term but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Isn't that the grip you use to gain greater strength when blocking or clinching?
I'm just guessing :)

Occasionally a blunted portion of the forte, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricasso or Fehlsch?rfe (meaning “missing sharpness”) at the base of the blade allowed a hand to be placed below the lower guard to “shorten the grip” and make the handle like a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polearm. This allowed the user to crudely repel a cavalry charge.

I hate it. I stick with Iron Swords (and get mocked by guards), until I find a dwarven or orcish blade.

Honestly, I think it's the only redeeming factor of those ugly swords. It's cool. Makes me wanna equip it.

...I don't think I've ever equiped a 2H sword.

Go Google some medieval tapestry and illustrations on a weapon called the "Zweihander". Some of those pics will show you the reason why the users of such heavy and sluggish weapons had to hold them the way they did.

Otherwise without it, it would almost be like trying to hack and slash with a mailbox post.

I might dig the grip area more without the leather. Or if it was more ornate, like Conan's Atlantean. Better yet, put some dovah script on there or something.

I think I like http://static.skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/images/2933-1-1326734286.jpg better, especially retextured as moonstone.

Those are all modeled from the Iron sword right?

That's why I keep it around.

It's for balance. If you hold the sword where you described, the sword has more balance. Hold it at the tilt for extra power in your swing and reach.

It's a nice feature, although it's a shame that the game doesn't make use of it.
