Im torn between 2 races and builds, the atltmer mage, or an argonian one-handed and shield character.Any suggestions on whats best?

If you want the best rather than preference, then orc, high elf or breton are the 'best' IMO depending on your class. For your one hand shield character, orc is probably the best. For the mage then yeah high elf is definitely the best, bretons are useful for the magic resist though.

Not sure why, but I really dislike playing a non human like character, so I usually go with breton, or high elf if I can make them look human like ha.

Personally I'd go for Altmer. Good magicka bonus, and I like the Highborn power. I guess it's also about how you want your character to look like, these are quite different in terms of looks.

There is no best race, really. For most advantageous traits in Skyrim i would have to say the Nords are the best then because they have 50% resistance to frost and about 50% of the enemies exclusively use frost spells or damage.

Not to mention the Nords, or at least the first preset for the male Nord, is the best looking human male in the game, IMHO.

I plan to make a Dunmer for a more magic using character so I would go with Argonian instead of Altmer for a lizard hunter/warrior type, but that's for my character. Just go with a style you want to play as.
