What would you want in a Metal Blog?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:32 pm

So I want to start up a blog about heavy metal music. So far what I did was sell my entire collection of CD's and have started to by them back. I did this because my girlfriend is getting into the music and I wanted to rexperience finding and buying the music with her the way I did. In other words I wanted her to experience it the way I did because I love her and want to share that part of myself with her.

So our idea so far is to buy back classic metal albums (moving onto obscure titles after necessities are covered) and then write about them, review them, and so forth. We would also like to do a little bit of local spotlight for Grand Rapids MI area.

What other features do you guys feel are important to cover. Right now I dont have a super solid direction, and I want to create something quality and worth reading. I value the input of metalheads, and those curious about the genre.

Thanks in advance.

Just explain the evolution of bands with different albums, the subject matter of their songs, the motives and inspirations behind them, the genre and subgenre it is, and what other bands/albums/songs are similar to it in subject matter or genre.

To be honest, I think reviewing the classics is somewhat pointless as most people probably know about them. What I think would be more interesting, (for myself at least) is a look at some more contemporary bands, describe the details I mentioned above, and then see if you can find which classic bands they may have been influenced by. Then include a tiny history lesson about that band then.

However, I'm sure there are plenty of folks who would like to know about the classics, so you should write about whatever you know more about. Stick to your strengths. :)

The thing I like most about reading metal blogs is finding obscure stuff I'd never have heard otherwise. There's pretty much no point in starting one and writing about nothing but how great Maiden are, because thousands upon thousands of people have done that already. I'd recommend digging around your local area, go to a few shows, get some EPs or Demos of underground bands and write about them. That way, you're not only writing interesting stuff but you're helping the local music scene.
