What do you like about Skyrim?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:38 pm

I've seen so many threads about bad things in Skyrim or complaining. Etc. But what about a thread that is positive about Skyrim? So.. I made it. Say the things in Skyrim that you like and why.

I'll list my things, though not in any order.. Just a random order.

1. Dragons. I personally love the dragons in Skyrim. These are the dragons I like the most due to Bethesda didn't over-done them so that they are too powerful to kill but at the same time, they didn't under-done them so that they are too weak and easily killed. I also respect the Dragonic Language; creating a fake language like that is never an easy thing to do, if you ask me.

2. Werewolves. Yes, I love how they did werewolves in Skyrim. I like how you transform and I like transforming at will. I also like it how being a Werewolf isn't a big "I am super powerful blah blah." thing and is actually hard not to die as a werewolf.

3. Followers and Dremoras. I like the follower system in Skyrim and I love that there is at least a few essential followers in Skyrim. I also love the Dremoras. Once again, Beth made some awesome Dremoras.

4. Shouts. Unrelenting Force never gets old for me.

5. Magic. Okay, I like the magic in Skyrim a lot and all the unique looks for spells. Better in the past where the majority of spells kinda do look exactly the same. Like, all Illusion spells were the same and all Alteration spells pretty much looked the same. Not like this in Skyrim and I like it a lot. I also like the unique effects in Skyrim that you need to find to use them, instead of just buying them.

6. Radiant Quests. I love doing quests and Radiant Quests are my fave kind cause I can always get them. Simple as that.

And my list goes on, you may say, so I'll stop talking now.

Skyrim Over-All: I love it and Bethesda never disappoint me with games they make.

-Crafting (Smithing, Enchanting and Alchemy), including work like cooking, woodcutting and mining. It adds a level of immersion and makes my character seem more like a... person. After killing a dragon, a homemade stew fits just right.

-Freedom. Yup. I find Skyrim to be very open for roleplaying, with so many things to do.

-NPC conversations and interactions. There's nothing like walking into a place and hearing some NPCs talking about things I've never heard before. And they're usually quite amusing, like the time when Vanae was casually jumping in the forge and overheard Maven Black-Briar and Haelga... chatting.

-Weather. Just beautiful. My favorite type is clear- at night, because of auroras, but still I really enjoy when my character is trekking through a snowstorm or sneaking through the mist.

-Small NPC favor quests. No, I am not mad nor did I fall asleep in a pile of Greenmote.
There are just some moments in which I'd deliver a shipment rather than... kill stuff.

-Daedric Princes. Awwyeah, do I love them. And most of them got featured very nicely. Well, except for Mephala.
Spoiler
Communicating with Peryite was quite amusing, Vaermina's voice was so perky, and Meridia knows how to throw a show- floating in the air is awesome!

Btw, it's very nice to see positive threads around!

#1 Freedom to create your own narrative and play it how you want

#2 The amount of detail that's gone into the world.

#3 Being constantly surprised by the seemingly endless amount of things that can happen

#4 The atmospherics - weather, music and scenery

#5 character growth and even follower growth.

+ loads more...love it!

The land and the scenery. Beautifully done, for the most part. And the auroras- very nice. They've finally managed to put together an open world that feels like a world, not like a procedurally genereated landscape with skimpy, procedurally generated groundcover. A lot of love was put into creating the gameworld, and making it look believeable. (now for making the long-distance scenery look a bit better...).

Animals, monsters and humanoids were all created and animated quite well. One of the most cringe-worthy aspects of many past games I've noticed, is how awkward and unrealistic the movement animations were, for people and other creatures. There are some oddities in animations, here and there, but for the most part, I'm amazed at how real they appear. In Skyrim, they done it good. It really helps to increase immersion in the game.

Archery. I've always been a bow fan in fantasy games, and the bow-shooting system in Skyrim is the best and most fun I've ever used, in any game. A model for how to do archery right. My only real quibble with it, is the maximum range with them, and that you can easily kill enemies out well past 100 yards or more, almost as far as the eye can see- with little effort. In reality, even the very best archers won't attempt to hit a live target out past 50-60 yards, and most are not all that accurate beyond 30-40 yards. And that's with modern, fancy, high-tech bows. Bows in Skyrim are real sniper rifles.

Dungeons. Yes, they are all pretty similar in basic form and function- a tube on rails that ends with a mini-boss, a goody-chest, and a handy exit door... but I never cease to be amazed by how well done most of them are, within that limiting framework. There actually is a lot of variation in design between them, in my opinion, and some of them are pure gorgeous. And the little mini-stories you get from clues and background scenes in many of them, adds a nice touch- most of them have some little interesting side-story to tell, if you bother to look. I don't get bored by them, anyway. But, I'm a dungeon fan, and unless you really screw them up, I'll probably enjoy them.

Those are the main things I enjoy, and that keep me playing after hundreds of hours- and I give credit where credit is due. Skyrim has a lot of elements that I am less than fond of, and I think could use a lot of improvement or fixing, but that's for other threads.

1. Exploring: The detail of the world and creative dungeon designs.

2. Combat: Destruction spells, melee, sneak attacking, and shouts.

3. Music: Boss battle music and atmosphere music

4. Some questlines: The Daedric quests and College of Winterhold questline are my favorite

5. Lore: Daedra lore, Dark Brotherhood lore, and Creature lore are my favorite

The perk system and its user interface along with the audio which plays moving from perk to perk.

The look of the races and the character generation.

The subtle randomness of loot along with other things in the world. I can die reload a save and not encounter the enemy i did before dying which is very nice.

The amount of different clothes.

All the various tasty food including apple pie and mead!

Ancient nordic weapons.

Enchanting, Conjuration, Destruction and all the other magic schools which have one or more spells which can very interesting to use in effect and visuals.

Combat and kill cams. Very adrenaline stimulating with plenty of dark humour.

The variety and look of the different armors. It can be quite a task choosing to be a heavy or light armor user. Being able to mix and match is also great.

The amazing immersive weather. Yesterday i noticed how the grass lit up whenever lightning would occur in the sky. Talk about surreal. The rain droplets on rivers and lakes is breath taking to see. Ten years ago such a thing would have made a computer crash to desktop.

The creepy mysterious look of dungeons and the intricate trap system. There occupants are also mind numbing terrifying.

The wildlife and the different ways to hunt them. I wasnt to great with a bow but using destruction magic to hunt deer and elk gave me much more better exciting results.

Having bandits not acttack on sight but instead warning me to keep my distance. Makes them more believable and as if i could possibly trade with them when it comes to black market goods.

Smithing, Cooking, wood chopping, mining, clam diving.

Archery combat which actually has me using a bow and arrow alot of times now compared to past Elder Scrolls games.

The immersive dreamlike audio especially when using headphones like the Koss Pro 4AAT i just picked up the other day.

Shrines and graveyards of many sizes and possible inhabitants all throughout the world.

The...children.

The easy installation of Skyrim when reinstalling.

Taverns and the wonderful sense of comradarie and relaxation with plenty of warmth from the nearby fireplaces etc. Being able to give mead and ale to fellow tavern patrons is pretty cool.

Dragons and their creepy malevolent language.

How plenty of things are hidden in plain sight and dont get seen til many a new character later.

The look of books and the excellent writing in them. Same for journals and notes around the world.

The harsh brutal world. The buetiful soft moments of a sunrise sunset.

The look and design of lakes and other bodies of water full of life.

Detail in world-building.

From being able to collect stuff that flies or swims around to people picking up fallen weaponry in battle.
AI astounds me more than anything else in this game I suppose.
I especially like seeing the random npc's duking it out, necromancers against bandits versus a dragon, though I suppose one could argue its watching the game play itself.

love the addition of true heights and elevation differences.

the idea of perks.

archery and stealth.

the continued implementation of item collection and display.

music. graphics.

The broad possibilities of characters (races/costumization/builds).
Big open world where you have to stay sharp.
Lots of quests apart of the MQ.
Feeling epic.

Etc etc. :)

Dragons are pretty awesome looking, the engine while largely unrealized is incredibly smooth, lots of depth to dungeons with all the puzzles and good graphics, some good dialogue that sticks ("all... lies!"), the depth of the world though again largely unrealized in terms of things you can actually interact with, and did I mention awesome graphics?

The world design is breathtaking. I also like the local bounty system, the variety of dungeons, the dialogue in real time, the beast races models, the music, the return of paid transport, pretty much all the water bodies (but not so much the lack of underwater content), the dragons, the ice trolls, the night skies....

I like the 2 handed warhammers. I think they are the funnest weapons to use, with the best cinematic kill animations (especially the neck-breaking one from 1.5). I like master magic spells. I like the College of Winterhold. I like getting 120 black-briar meads from the barrels in their meadery for free.

All of it... The only thing I don't like is making the wrong decision in the game and can't go back. For instance killing parathaux. Actually that;s a good aspect, creates good roleplaying atmosphere.

Let's see, I like the game in general, but a few things catches my attention on this topic:

Perks

Thu'um

Sprinting. I know a little detail, but still it adds to the experience.

Dungeons. They are a bit more linear this time(at least to some degree), but I feel each dungeon(especially the Dwemer ones) are more diverse than earlier games.

The Lore aspects of the Civil War. Probably never been a lore-topic discussed so much as that one, and Bethesda did a great job making the choice far from clearcut.

Khajiit accents. Love their new way of speaking.

Very open for roleplaying, like earlier ES games.

The music with its universal grandness of scope. Always sets the right mood and unexpected ones too.

The world architecture which is truly flawless in its design. Everything feels as it should which is very awesome yes very awesome indeed is what it is. Not once have i to see anything that seemed out of place or as if it could have been done better. Truly Morrowind level of detail perfection.

The blood effects. So rich and thick and fluid. Oh my my!

The huge mountains and being able to walk to any of them i can see to enjoy the vast heart inspiring view.

The huge quests and multiple outcomes with the choice to be honest or devious..deadly devious. Oh yeaaa...

The kill cams. Just love taking a battle axe and using it to bash my armored skull into an opponents soft noggin. Bam! Bam! Bam! Ya ha! ha! ha!

Once more gotta mention the godly immersive sound work of Skyrim. Listening to my newly purchased Koss Pro4AAT headphones this morning i could actually hear the soft pitter patter of skeever feet as they rushed up some dungeon stairs. It felt very authentic with no fake overdone soundstage effect. It was like i was actually there with the audio effects being properly portioned according to their distance. Talk about a sugary sweet audio moment.

Seeing a female fire atronach dancing in the dark distance of a grassy field in the middle of the night.

Seeing a ghost traveling the roads in the deepest dark of night.

Hooded skeletons with glowing eyes...

Spiders and their habitations.

The way chests and other containers open up.

The slamming shattering sound effect of gate traps which makes my mind scream, "Ugh! Thats gotta hurt me! Aiiieeeya! " .
