What do you need money for?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 4:14 am

Hi,

Been playing a couple of weeks, and figured out most stuff. But what do you need money for in this game? Anything I should be saving up for? I've got 7K odd at level 10 and don't know if that's good or bad, but haven't seen a need for it yet.

Cheers.

Eventualy you'll be sitting on 100k+ with nothing to use it for.. So don't be shy to spend it all while you stil can hehe. Training is a good money sink.

You don't even need to use it to buy enchanted gear, even if you can't make it yourself. You'll find enough enchanted stuff that you'll have it stashed all over the place.

the economy is broken in skyrim. spend as you will, whenever, wherever.

shoot, give it away. oh wait, i can't.

training, if that's how you're playing and houses. that's it. that's the economy.

buy a house? buy an item in shop with a rare enchant then disenchant if u want the enchant? Invest in a few shops? get a companion and buy them good gear? buy supplies to help you level cuz ur a lazy a** that doesnt wana gather materials? buy a nice bowl? buy a nice statue? go kill som1 you dont like and then pay off your debt? buy a cool spell? Bribe some greedy bast**d? Give money to a beggar? repetetively buy and sell one item at a shop? Buy items to make other NPC's houses look better?

lol just a few dumb ideas and 7k isnt too much money. Its not bad for a level 10 but I goes pretty quick. =P

nah, you sound like a du, lol. just kidding.

couldn't resist.

but, your post makes a point: items aren't bought because we need to buy them. they're bought so that we can somehow spend our money.

Well, if you are not spending it on anything then you are saving it.

Save up for a house. You'll rarely need to spend much money on much of anything else. I suppose you might need to buy the occasional spell, if you're using magic and not finding spells quickly enough to suit you, but other than that, not much. I've never bothered buying any weapons or armor. Bought the occasional ore, when I didn't feel like running out to find it myself, but that's rare and not that expensive.

Other than a house, the only thing I spent a larger a of mount money on is training. And it's pretty worth it, too.

Money can be exchanged for goods and services.

I also like to "make it rain" for broad in the Dawnstar Inn.

Can't you donate it? Like give it to the priests of Mara?

Yes, 5 gold at a time, or beggars. 1 gold at a time
Giving money to beggars actually makes money because of The Gift of Charity bonus

So for a mere 20,000 donations, you can be rid of that 100k gold in no time!

I have to agree with the other replies:

So far the major expenses are raw materials for training the crafting skills Smithing/Alchemy/Enchanting. Smithing is the cheapest early on because all you need is Iron Ingots and Leather Strips to make Iron Daggers. With this skill at least, it doesn't matter what you craft to boost the skill, just how many times you craft or improve any smithing object.

Alchemy is a bit more expensive because of the trial and error involved. Typically the rarer/more expeinsive the ingredients, the better the resulting potion/poison mixed and the better the skill boost.

Enchanting is potentially the most expensive because of the cost of the base enchanted items that you need to disenchant to get their effects, plus it's going to be a while before you have a reliable way to soul trap to fill empty gems and filled soul gems are considerably more expensive.

Houses are a major expense for a starting character, so it's a good idea to join the Companions and/or the College of Magic to get the free bed and containers to stash your gear until you get your income flowing.
Once the gold starts flowing and burning a hole in your pocket it's time to do all of the house related quests to buy up all the housing and related upgrades.

If you have gold to burn, consider using the trainers to boost your skill training from the following levels:

Adept Trainers cannot train past 50 so use them at level 45 to boost 50
Expert Trainers cannot train past 75 so use them at level 70 to boost to 75
Master Trainers cannot train past 90 so use them at level 85 to boost to 90
