What do you think of the Hyper-realistic art style?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:47 am

The developers have pretty much said it on different interviews in a way that's pretty hard for me to disagree with. Functionally, the exaggerated details allow players to quickly figure out all they need to know about an opponent. Team, Class, Bodytype, and even how experienced the person is (based on their gear). But even from a purely artistic standpoint, I like it. Its unique and a refreshing change of pace. They seem to have pulled off making it cartoony and yet detailed and realistic looking. The widely varying colors and textures give an excellent contrast between the two sides.

I am curious what others think of the style though.

I also enjoy the art style of Brink. I've always been a fan of cartoony-realistic hybrids. Games like CoD and BF:BC2 + various others look like clones. If you look at any screenshot or gameplay footage of Brink, you'd know immediately that it can't be any other game. It's just so unique and I'm glad it's this way.

I think it's awesome. Awesome enough to sit beside Da Vinci's artwork.

it's a great way to open up customization, if you need to keep it realistic, you lose a lot of options.
and they pulled it off pretty good too, the faces just take some getting used to.

I think anime fans, like myself, may find it a bit easier to accept the exaggerated facial features

Hyper-realistic games have more doors open to them because they dont have to worry about unrealistic things so i genrally find that hyper-realistic looking games are more fun

Huh, never thought about it like that. You could really have a point there.
I love the art style, both because it's fairly unique (I'm a serious svcker for that) and pretty sweet to boot. Plus, as a bit of an avid drawer, the art style looks pretty fun to use.

I like the look of Brink quite a bit as well. It's colorful, for one thing. It has a vibrancy that is missing in most other shooters out there. And I really like the way they did the characters. Like they said, you really can't mistake Brink for anything else. Plus, I don't think a lot of the customization options would work as well on non-cartoony dudes. That stylised look adds a lot of personality and individuality to the characters.

In short, Brink has accomplished something that a lot of shooters completely ignore: looking cool. Not realistic, but cool.

I think it's awesome. Being different really pays of in this case. You get lot's of information just by looking at opponents.
It's refreshing to see some exageration in an FPS (most of them try to be realistic). Also I like colored environments.

This game kinda reminds me of TF2, which i love so much, its cartoony, but this game is way better its got that but with much greater detail, customization to the full capacity iv ever seen in a fps game. I know this game will change a lot and i hope it does. From what iv seen it deserves to be known. There is competition out there, Iv lost interest in cod, its been taken over by little kids and stupid glitches, Halo, iv always hated its graphics even in this new one like like crap, But I think this game will make it past them both dare i say so, i cant find one thing about this game i dont seem to like so far. I just hope kids dont get a hold of this game and get to play 24/7 and kick my ass every day

I Love that they went with the cartoony art style for the game. I'm so sick and tired of the realistic crap, all the other games C.O.D. , M.O.H , BF so and so forth; realism is dead in my opinion. plus who plays a game for it's realism. When I play video games I play to get away from reality; a break from the same nonsense. If you want realism go Join the military. My hats off to 'Splash Damage' for breaking the mold.

You know that SD has really pulled off something quite impressive when I have yet to see any criticisms of the style.

i remember seeing people complain about the faces, but i think faces have always been considered the hardest thing to make and animate

Funny. I thought especially Anime-Fans wouldn't, but rather people who enjoy western comics by DC and Marvel.

I really enjoy the art style. I prefer stylized to realistic, and stylized games tend to age much better than games that aim for realism. The Timesplitters games, for example, have aged much better than the early Rainbow Six games. And it looks cool and unique.

Both groups are used to stylized faces and exaggerated features. Thus, I think they are more willing to accept an image that's not quite "human". As opposed to many Americans who think that cartoons and comics, and really anything animated or illustrated, are only for kids.

Love their choices for the hybrid of cartoony & realistic. Along with vibrant color scheme it presents a unique look for a game that stands out.
so far what they have shown customization wise, looks very impressive and deep. much more so then a lot of games out and coming.

its only a last 5-6 of years that everything in games started looking more or less realistic, before that graphics were not good enough to talk about realistic looking face or something...so those who come from those days of old graphics maybe be more tolerant to the new style

I don't mind brink's style of art, 3D art, whatever. it is a nice change from looking at MW2 and BC2, and the fact that it gives me a sci-fi feeling, i'm already loving the game.

pst, someone draw a Brink style female. and post :)

Love the art style. I think it will take the constant stress out of multiplayer.
Colourful things are very nice to look at, pleasure to the eye :shifty:
Also, it makes it a new, different experience to us, and makes it much more easier for SD to produce.
Plus it has the possibility to look even better then realistic games, such as COD, M.O.H and BFBC...
It's been done before with one of my favouriiteee games, Borderlands. Not saying they're similar, or ripping of each other, just saying it's a nice experience :D
