Whatever happened to the roads being safe?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:31 pm

In oblivion it was better to stick to the roads to keep safe. In Skyrim you're warned about soldiers on the roads, but what really happens? I get 4 sabre cats in a row :/

Skyrim is much more wild and sparser populated by people, Sabre cats arent that tough though. Just jump ovver/run around rocks, put as much distace between you and them if you cant kill them lol, I usually 3 hit them now, and thats without any over powered gear. (I use steel armor on most of my characters, but nothing higher then Wolf armor on any of them) Or if all else fails, find something else it will attack that you can out run lol, You dont have to out run the bear, just your friends :D

I didn't notice, mostly because I never take the roads. I mostly go directly from A to B. However, I did notice that some bandit and forsworn hideouts are along roads, which broke some immersion (how is anyone supposed to travel with bandits hiding out on the roads). And dragons travel too fast to avoid them just by staying on the roads.

The major roads usually are safer in this game, but this is an Imperial Province under a weakened Empire.

I have the opposite view.

In Oblivion the guards warn you to stay on the roads, but in reality I've found the roads in Oblivion far more dangerous than the countryside. There were high level enemy spawn points all over major roads. (I am playing with MMM but I think the same is true unmodded, just that the enemies might be less dangerous).

In Skyrim alot of the spawn points on the roads result in non-hostile events. Like the Redguards, or someone walking. Occasionally there is a high level enemy but much less than Oblivion. In my opinion.

And that is a good thing. I think the roads should be safer than the wilderness. And my impression they are safer in Skyrim than Oblivion.

Ok what a couple of you missed is if there are all these guards, soldiers, and bandits all over the roads, then why have I been running into nothing but sabre cats lol. They are pretty tough for my level 7 currently armor-less argonian

Well, the only soldiers on the roads are the prison transport ones, the one thats with the couple going to Sollitude, and for the Guards, only near towns, Bandits are in the forts. And since youre low level and a Argonian, Find a river and SWIM :D Kitty no like da water :P

4 sabre cats in a row on main roads?

it's

1. a lie
or
2. caused by a mod..

this does not happen in vanilla skyrim.

In several situations, people say that guards are needed moreso to fight the war, regardless of which side they are on. With guards fighting a war, there are fewer to guard the roads. That is why some people complain about bandits ransacking carts, such as Belethor and a random dead Redguard woman by a burned caravan.

1. Why would I lie? If you need to know I encountered a hired thug and some skeletons too.

But I share your surprise which is why I made the topic. This is my... 5th character (as far as actually playing, not just character customization) and I've never run into this many so fast.

2. Im on 360. No mods.

Untrue. This does happen - it's happened to me before and on PS3 there's no choice but to play 'vanilla'.

I agree, I wish the roads were safer. At the very least there should be some Imperial or Stormcloak soldiers along the roads, depending on who's in control in your game. Not many, just one or two every so often as you travel.

Not this Khajiit, Jo'Nyan shows Sabre cat who is highest on food chin, and if lucky, does not become new blanket!

thugs and skeletons is pretty normal, yes. so very believable. but 4 sabre cats? i play since release and the highest number i encountered in vanilla skyrim were 2 in the reach...

lol bandit settlements are along the road for a reason. same as forsworn, it adds to immersion ( lol ) for me. in the middle of no where, where no guards patrol and people travel.. well it seems like the perfect place to set up camp and rob travelers

The guards all took arrows to the knee.....

But to go along with what others are saying, its most likely due to the wars going on. Sure theres an increase of troops, but they're focused on killing other Stormcloaks/Leigonnares, they arent focused on some measly bandit

Saying that the roads the the ES series of games is safe is just like saying that the highways are safe to for our kids to play in.

In the past three ES games, I've found that its safer (ie: less time consuming due to less frequent enemy encounters) to cut across the wilderness rather than stick to the roads.

The imperial guards, or guards in general are not nearly as bad ass as the imperial guards in oblivion, thats why. I agree there should be more patrols on the roads. Or more bad ass guards
