I thought Las vegas was in the nevada desert (aswell as area 51)

please someone clarify.

Nevada desert would be any desert in Nevada. Mojave is only partially in Nevada. You could say that "Nevada desert" is the portion of the Mojave that is within Nevada.

The Mojave Desert is the official name of the desert in Nevada. There's no "Nevada Desert." When people are talking about the Nevada desert, they are talking about the Mojave (though the Mojave stretches into other states as well).

The name.

The Mohave is like the Sahara or the bordering Sonoran, it stretches across many State and International Borders (parts of the Sonora Desert stretch into Mexico) The Sonora Desert is a bit different than the Mohave, as it has more vegetation. The main plant difference between the Mohave and the Sonora is the former has Joshua Trees and the latter has Saguaro Cacti. The Mohave is considered to be more desolate and foreboding.

Nevada Desert = What the locals call their strip of sand.
Mojave Desert = What geographers call a big strip of sand.

As a geology student, and a native of Nevada, there is no such thing as the Nevada Desert in Geologic Terms. You are either in the Great Basin Desert or the Mojave Desert. Nevada has been mingled in with the name of its deserts. Mostly because the deserts have become synonymous to the state. Also as people who don't know will not know unless they know about it through taking a geology course. Often times Geology courses only cover the places in which the class happens, so if your not in the Nevada area it is not probable that you would know about the states Geology. However, I hope this knowledge has helped to make you wiser.

If your in Nevada and around the Las Vegas area I would tell ya if you like road trips you may want to head to the Hoover dam to see this marvel of modern bridge engineering.

But are there any cacti in the Mojave?

It would be nice to see one or two prickly plants.

The Mojave is also home to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crotalus_scutulatus which is very aggressive.

As for vegetation, it's mostly Russian thistle (tumbleweed), silver sagebrush, creosote bush and tamarind or tamarisk (I cant remember, it's an invasive import, the stuff is all over Nevada, Utah and Arizona).

There's also antelope, coyote, cougar, jack rabbit, scorpions (they aren't terribly dangerous), lots and lots of snakes and lizards, mule deer, etc.

Oh, and Gila Monsters, I know you can find them in Arizona and New Mexico, so probably Nevada as well. I don't actually recall of any from when I lived there though.

As for cactus, there's the odd barrel cactus and the one with tons of long branches and huge hooked spines, and peyote in the higher altitudes. There's also the prickly pear cactus and a few others, mostly it's just scrub, sand, dirt and rock though.

There are Cacti in both deserts. It is just the majestic tall Saguaros usually only grow in the Sonoran and the Joshua Trees in the Mohave. Kind of like Signature Plants for the reqions. Both deserts do share other plant species. The Sonoran can also have more grasses and more dense vegetation.

Some of it is very beautiful, I agree with that, a lot of it (the area around Vegas for example) is just yellowish dirt, yellowish rock, sand and scrub brush though. If they really wanted to do an impressive environment DLC, Southern Utah would be a fantastic choice, Zion, Red Rocks, etc. It's a stunning landscape.

You don't have to tell me what Vegas looks like. I sort of live here. I am a bit biased so it is all good.

DLC in Utah would be great, but nothing beats The Grand Canyon. I would love to see what is left of Yosemite or Sequoia National Parks. I love the Las Vegas sun sets. I hope they do that right in New Vegas.

Kind of embarrassing to admit, since I lived in the South West for so long, but I've never actually been to the Grand Canyon. :blush2: Sounds great in-game though. I think it's just a big radioactive pit in the Fallout setting though.

Yosemite, Sequoia and Yellowstone would be pretty rad though, I agree. And the sun sets in Vegas are spectacular, as are the thunderstorms, incredible. Doubt they'll have that though, sadly.

I am not sure if you have played it, but one game that has done the Grand Canyon really well is Fallen Earth. Now as for it being a radioactive dust bowl. I am not sure that is the case as that is the area where Caesar's legion is coming from after all. Who knows if that is where we are headed in the DLC.

So it's safe to say you wouldn't go see a movie called "Zombie snakes on a plane"?

Las Vegas means "The meadows" In Spanish.

It was actually naturally greener then it is now....but the pumping dry of aquifers and the building by man disrupted it.
Especially the bulldozing ..stripped the surface layers right off, destroying the bacteria , algae and moss that kept dust and sand under check.
Before man screwed it up ..dust storms were rare in that part of the desert.

Now all the water comes from the lake and is pumped to Vegas to be stored in multi- million gallon holding tanks.
