Whats your favorite part of a quest?

I like a quest with good dialogue and no "go collect A and B and kill this many Cs".

edit: I completely forgot one of the most important things. Many alternate solutions/endings for different characters.

personally i would like to see something that is very rare in games these days. clues. not a quest arrow that shows you exactly where to go but a clue of some kind that is specific enough to get you to the general area but still requires that you do a little searching for yourself. morrowind had this system and some other games as well and i really miss that.

I'm basically very combat oriented so challenging and fun fights are my first priority when it comes to quest mods. Of course, I also appreciate lore, story telling, characters etc., but all that is moot if the combat is lacking IMO.

I think combat will be a good point to focus on, in a positive way. NV is lacking so much in the random wilderness fights that Fo3, or even Oblivion had. In NV its hard to find something to fight, and most of the things you can fight die in one hit and then its over for another 15 minutes. I will try to make alot of what I do be consistantly populated with things to kill, or fight. I do agree with how they made the game so that you dont have to fight anybody. But that also made it an incredibly drab game. You could walts into anyone'd base and nobody would fight you unless you attacked them. It made for very uneventful gameplay. I am going to have a fun time balancing a good story, NPC's, fighting, exploring, clue-finding, level design, and dialog into some good ol' fashioned quests.

I actually think games are more interesting though where you can make it through the entire game without making a single kill. This is why I'm actually interested in laser stun-mode mods, tranq darts, and other ways to use fatigue instead of death to deal with people, and only killing when it's absolutely necessary, when there's no other choice. This is perhaps what I found most interesting about Deus Ex.

Myself, I'm in it for being a detective, an ambassador, a diplomat, and a scholar. Combat is always my last recourse. I have no objections with including lots of combat, but I wouldn't be the biggest fan of any mod that made heavy combat non-optional. That at least didn't give the player the chance to avoid it, no matter how crazy/bizarre that chance is. I'd still enjoy the mod, especially if I could do the combat without killing, but I find the most fun playthrough the one where I can say "Right, I got to the end killing, what... eight people? That's likely a hundred-thousand less than most people managed." >_>

I like quests where you have to try and figure something out yourself. One of my favorite missions was the one where I had to protect president Kimbal. I felt so cool and sneaky when I figured out who it was.

I love talking to get my way in games, normally though I use that to manipulate people and exploit them. I'm not so much a diplomat as a conman at heart :P I have no issues killing in games, though convincing someone to commit suicide is usually more satisfying that pulling the trigger myself (I know, I'm horrible)

The exception is Assassins Creed, I do try to be stealthy during missions because that is how the game wants me to play, but I also walk around town randomly slaughtering any guards I come across before wandering off to the next group...

I like quests that involve a decision.
Kill the villain or let him escape and save the hostages?
Fight through the barracks or sneak through the irradiated tunnel?
Recover the technology to help people or destroy it so it can't be misused?

See this is what will make it difficulty to do. Some of you love to wander around talking to people and learning stories, while others just love the combat and finding cool places. Though, with thorough enough scripting I could please everyone. Its possible to make a huge battle that you can avoid through persuasion and barter/speech/charisma whilst also having little areas of people to fight, where you could just knock them all out, take what you need, and leave before they recover.

I am almost smack dab in the middle here. Which I think will be a huge advantage for making this. I want a good story and some interested people/dialog to back up the quest. While I also really enjoy combat, and if I cannot convince the person through speech, I am more than happy to convince their separate body parts after the fight.

I love these kinds of decisions too and intend to put many of them in my mods. I love games like the earlier Splinter Cell's where if you had to get through a room, you could just go in and shoot/kill all the guards inside, or crawl through some vents over them and get past undetected.
