When do Multiplayer games die?

Post » Sun Oct 16, 2011 3:00 pm

Hey, so I recently started playing Bioshock 2 again, and was thinking about playing online. (My room doesn't have internet connection, so I have to move my 360 to a different room to connect.)

My question is: When doe Multiplayer games die? When does the multiplayer on a game, such as the juggernaut COD games, or the smaller yet, still fun games like DMMM: Elements die? Does anyone actually know when the user base recedes so much that its a "Cyber-Wasteland" or like in DMMM:E which has NO ONE?

Guesses? Comments?

I'm too lazy to move my 360 right now... is there anyone on B2?

Thanks for the read, at least! :D

for consoles it is when they turn off the servers.
or gamers stop playing the game because old.

Interesting. It does make sense now that you say this, but I hadn't considered they'd turn the servers off.

I asked the same question a long time ago when finally got a decent internet connection to play star wars battlefront . When I looked for servers, nobody was there playing it...

-there are so many releases nowadays that a multiplayer aspect of a game has a really "short life span", people will eventually get bored.

Both CoD4 and WaW (while hacked) are still active and playable.

Its just interesting. If I still had Halo 3 I'd probably play that. I liked it a lot.

I suppose they're dead when no one is playing it anymore. Servers going down doesn't always kill them.

They just killed Halo 2 on Live last year, so about that long.

That's the good thing about PC games, there is always a group playing multiplayer even after the official servers die off.

After they get repetitive or old. I mean who would wanna play bf bad company 1 when you could play bf3? Also the popularity of the game depends too. I played the bioshock2 multiplayer just to get the platinum trophy. Very few people played it so I stopped.

Well, that's true, to some extent.

People still play Halo 3 on Live, and that game is old. It's a great game, the multiplayer in Halo 3 is great. I still play it.

I recall EA shutting down some servers for several of their older games somewhat recently. Or they were about too. One of the two.

Because a lot changes between games, and sometimes people don't agree with the changes and even after they try them they still just want to go back to what they thought was better.

Yep. I'd much rather play CoD4/WaW than MW2/BO.

In the case of CS1.6, pretty much never, it's still one of the top ten steam games at all times.

I still play BF1942, and it's not hard to find full 64 player servers (even in the NZ/AU region, mind you).

In the case of newer games though, they seem to die a lot more quickly, especially on consoles. Speaking of which, Metal Gear Online for PS2 had to be my favourite multiplayer game ever, the day they turned off the servers was the day I died a little inside.
