if its a place you haven't discovered yet you will see it on the map, or else you'll never know what place it is unless they say its name

All you can do is study your world map real hard for a marker that wasn't there before. It could do with a better system really, because if you've got a pretty full map, it's like finding a needle in a haystack.

Then it isn't a quest, it's leading you to a quest, he probably just said something like 'I'm traveling to azuras shrine, you should come too'. Just look on your map at the places you know but haven't discovered.

if you cant find a place thats not discovered yet, he was on his way you already visited, thats why you cant find the location. Nothing to worry about
Spoiler
Theres usually just some bandits or stuff to kill.

I've got 344 locations discovered and NPCs still come up to me and tell me this. I have no idea where they're showing me.

I come across the mercenaries all the time who give you an updated map but I've never been able to find where they are sending me.

Seems like a color coding system would make this loads easier. Like Yellow or Green for not visited or Grey/White for visited.

map markers on places you haven't been to have a darker colour (black and grey i think). or you can just note the name of the place and search it up on for example uesp

Guys, the problem is that this idiot Adventurer doesn't tell me anything about it! He says just "u should go there". And i've got a map update. Then i open my map and i'm like... MOTHER OF GOD, where do i have to go? xD

Colour coding would be good but it wouldnt solve the problem if you have already visited the place. Maybe when you a re told to go to a place you have already been it should revert back to the undiscoverend marker.

undiscovered locations are black and discovered locations are white or light gray. just look for black icons on your map.

The problem is that there are dozens of possible places! I don't know which is the one!

Listen for the name in the spoken dialogue. If you can't match the location, Wiki it.

With mercenaries the name is not spoken. It's just "nearby".

are you kidding me?

I guarantee you it took you a significant more amount of time to write up this thread than it would have taken you to thoroughly search the game's map for what you are seeking.

Go here and do that. Very vague I know.

I like this game a lot. One thing I don't like is the journal. In Morrowind I liked how there wasn't a big white arrow over the location and I actually had to read and find where to go.

Really? Because there's no quest in it you know. It's just a way for the game engine to update your map with new (and possibly) undiscovered locations.

Not seeing how this is a problem, let alone a "huge" one.

uh unless your games bugged we do have that, visited places with a map marker will turn grey, and map updates like are being talked about here, where an npc talks about a specific location will be black and will turn grey once you've visited it.

Yes--I was agreeing with you. Sorry that didn't get directed at other posters correctly. Anyway, if you've already been to the location a mercenary marks for you...there's absolutely zero way to figure out where the heck they mean. I followed one around for a long time once and still never figured it out. Sigh. When the CK is out it'll be easier to see what's going on!
