When was the m16 invented?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:03 am

Im wondering if the m16 variants are breaking the 1950s feel.

in fallout 3 the rifles are based on the Fn-Fal and the Ak-47, both are 1950s rifles.

ok heres some info after a bit of research

AR-10 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-10 introduced in 1956 BUT few than 10,000 rifles assembled

The AR-7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-7 appears to be the "varment rifle"

Yeah and that standard only lasted some 15 years before blu-Ray is pushing it out. How many years did VHS tapes reign BTW? 25-30?

The real life 10mm round didn't exist until the 1980's - well after the development of the M16 and it's 5.56x45 round. A round which was coincidentally used for both the Assault Rifle and Chinese Assault Rifle in Fallout 3, even though it didn't exist until after the development of both of the real life rifles that those were aesthetically based on. 'Course the 10mm SMG in Fallout 3 didn't match any 1950's era weapons either.

So how would a rifle that looks like an M16 break the feel of the fallout universe? ;)

Gotta remember, it still has the 50s feel bit it's 2281! The great war happened in 2077 and the USA just developed power armor and robots exist and computers! Heck the compa look like old apples. Might be a 50s era feel but even the few modern type weapons dont break it in my opinion

I could go for Wanamingo, though. Great to see geckos again.

As for the M16, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. You just need to suspend disbelief, mod it out, or get someone else to mod it out for you. The second option requires you do to real work, the third requires you to convince someone else to whitewash the fence. The first just requires flexible thinking. :foodndrink:

The Colt 6520 10mm Pistol is may favourite in-game gun of all time. I hope New Vegas has the 6520 instead of the not-so-cool N99 model (Didn't have the bang the 6520 has)

Does it matter if it does?

They did have a 60's and 70's (and 80's :mohawk:) in Fallout.

Everything in the game will always have 50's design aesthetic, but it does not restrict what they design (only how they will design it).

The laser rifle has the 50's look & feel, and does not look like energy weapons from the "Aliens" or Starship Troopers films.
(but it was not designed in 1955)

Ridiculous question being that this story takes place way into the future and in an alternate universe! So say this was a real time line they went backwards as well as forward and so of course the M16 would be around! This game takes place in 2281!

NV has the exact same N99 10mm pistol that FO3 had. Except it has ironsights.

In the Fallout Universe the 1950s have long happened, but society and technology has remained in a similar state. The key difference is that micro transistors were never invented and as a result neither were microchips and so on meaning that computers and things remain extremely bulky and heavy. This doesn't however mean nothing happened in the long period between the 1950s and the War, developments that didn't rely on miniturised computers still happened, for example weapons like the m16.
I could be mistaking it for something else (And haven't actually played New Vegas yet) but wasn't this m16-alike mentioned beside a smashed open display case in the Museum of Technology in Fallout 3 as having been invented on some date or another.
It probably wasn't invented anywhere near the 1960s since VTOL aircraft/helicopters didn't exist until the Great War and weren't even completed until the Enclave got on with it.

Eh... The N99 in F3 had Iron Sights too, you just couldn't use them.

Honestly the guns in Fallout 3 were extremely boring to me. I still think most of the energy weapons are very boring looking (the tommy is nice though). I think New Vegas is going in the right direction.

only problem i have is that forward assist was not added until the m16 iirc. the m16 was not used until the late 60s, and even then it was still experimental.

they went to great lengths to improve the gun porm in the game, there are still are gonna be some inaccuracy and what not, it is just a game. my only peeve atm is the damn reloads. your like The Flash on speed when reloading your guns.

SLOW THEM DOWN for craps sake.

service rifle is (if anything) an AR-15

the varmint rifle looks made up, but it seems to follow the lines of the Remington Keene.
