Where did your Alien Fantasy World go?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:53 pm

I mean, Morrowind is really the best game in the series and my only answer is to why is because it was so alien and unique.
Oblivion and Skyrim are more standard Fantasy. Dragons, Trolls, Wolves, Rats (or Skeevers as they are now called) etc etc.

There are very few unique monsters you have been bringing back to the series. Why is that?

Why can't the game be more unique? Why do we have to rely on the modding community to make the game 100% :(

Examples of cool creatures I would have liked in Skyrim (no luckily not those stupid Cliff racers, EEK)

Alit
Bull Netch
Betty Netch (Yea where are the Netch farms? those were cool!)
Bonewalker
Bone Lord
(insert all types of Daedra Here)
Dreugh
Guar
Scrib
Kagouti
All the times of Kwama creatures
Nix Hounds
Ogrim (which were in Oblivion I believe but not Skyrim? Huh?)

All of the above are only in Morrowind and all those interesting Creatures along with the Biomes of Morrowind were so unique and Alien.
I see none of this in Skyrim.

Have game companies becoming more lazy these days or is something else goin on?
Would like your guys' opinions on this. Try not to flame though ;)

They also gave us that in Oblivion's Shivering Isles expansion. I hope some of Skyrim's dlcs will add more exotic locations and creatures as well. Fingers crossed!

Skyrim isn't supposed to be weird and fantastical like Morrowind. It's supposed to be similar to the Scandinavian regions IRL and it's always been perceived that way.

LordBafford: I agree to an extent and disagree to an extent. First, Yeah, morrowind WAS supposed to be alien-ish, and yes, Skyrim and Oblivion were not supposed to be.

On the other hand, they could have done a lot more to add interesting aspects to the game and its setting. We shouldn't expect alienness from a human-based nation...but we can expect spectacular settings, places that make an impact. Like Morrowind's daedric ruins, and the twisted beauty of them The unpredictability of the places. You go into one, its a single room with some annoying orcs. But you go into another one, and its a three-floor marvel where evidence of what once was is scattered about.

I remember that one ruin..Where you find the daedric arrows in the wall. And you follow the angle they are in to find the weapon that shot them. Stuff like that, the little things. Those feel missing at times.

Have you been to Blackreach? That's the most weird place I've been in just about any game!

There never was an Alien Fantasy World. Morrowind's wierdness detracted from the game.
TES has been "generic" since the time of the Imperial Simulacrum. There are FAR better games that present Unique and Alien worlds than TES.

There's a reason most of those beasties aren't in Skyrim: they don't live in the area. It would have been cool to see more Daedra represented.

I never felt that Morrowind being too unique detracted from it as a game, but to each their own. I felt that the stereotypical fantasy world was more than well-represented by all the other stereotypical D&D fantasy games, and thought it was refreshing to see some unique stuff.

You've got to remember that as far as the lore goes, Morrowind is probably the most unique setting in Tamriel and that's hard to follow up on. Changing ecology and lore simply to create a more alien setting would likely upset a lot of people.

@MouseMage: I totally agree with you, they could have created more locales that had impact, and the little things are certainly missing, but that's the price we pay for voice acting and higher end graphics. The budget can only be so big, and fans are only willing to wait for so long.

i, too, find it strange that beth couldn't come up with a few dozen unique/new creatures to occupy the land of skyrim. there are some good ones, but, i always like more enemy variety.

While I agree with some of your points I think I was a bit misunderstood.

I meant alienness as in Monsters and Creatures, Not setting. The setting is fine it's just the lack of interesting creatures that could/should have been in the game.
Bone walkers and Bonelords for example...those dudes were freaky as heck but you don't see them in Skyrim. they seemed to have dumbed down the spokiness factor (Although Blackreach was pretty...well let's just say colorful)

But again i'm not really talking about the environments. There are more mines in Skyrim but no Kwama Egg Mines (I'm not to informed about the Lore so I don't know if they would do stuff like that) But thanks for the feedback guys! :)

Mind giving a few examples? Not to undermine your argument, but out of genuine interest as I absolutely loved Morrowind's alien atmosphere and would adore any other games that achieve the same or better.

I miss... Rieklings. There's no reason that they couldn't have been included, descended from the Falmer though they may be.

Each region has it's own native flora and fauna in addition to 'spooky' characteristics. I think Skyrim is a very accurate representation of how it's always been described in lore.

Well. I agree with you that morrowind is the best.
But not that skyrim and oblivion has more standard fantasy worlds
I think Oblivion had more Medievel boring feel to it (Dont get me wrong i loved oblivion)
And skyrim has more of a brutal fantasy Lord of the rings style.Reminds me of that, but sure its different.

Planescape is worth playing for more reasons that it's setting too.
