I'm pretty sure you only need a leather strip, I could be wrong though.

If you need firewood, you can easily get that in Riverwood.
Just chop some wood there near the sawmill. Youll need a woodcutting axe.

You can upgrade stuff? I can't believe I've gotten to lvl 39, and have totally blown off all those blacksmith places. I can't believe I actually admitted this to everyone :blush2: I'm so ashamed! Truth is I work about 9 hours a day plus 3 hour commute round trip, so only get to play for an hour or so each night, and use that time to wander around, explore, do a quest here and there... next thing I know, I'm maxed out on sneak, in the 90s on archery, can yell at people causing them to fly back about a city block (man I could use that ability IRL) ... but haven't really even scratched the surface of this game. But now you've opened up a whole new world to me and I'm going to go learn about the different skills tonight! Thanks! Glad I joined these boards! LOL!

Yeah, according to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Long_Bow it requires firewood to upgrade. Go figure.
