Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:44 pm

further to my thread about mirror's edge 2.i started to play the first game again.i must admit to not having played it for around a month or so.now i'll definitely admit that i am not a great gamer, but mirror's edge is one of the few games i can play half decent (compared to other games i play).playing it again though,it's as if someone has pressed a crap switch (if that makes any sense?) i just keep on dying/playing rubbish  :blush2: does anyone else suffer with this debilitating condition (it's not just games that i suffer with this).anyone?

When game controls switch over. Like going from Halo ODST, to alan wake to fallout NV to dar souls. Fun times hitting the wrong button and wasting things or getting killed as a result.

If I haven't played a game in a while, I'm usually better at it than I was before.

When it comes to competitive shooters, I'm usually better after having taken a break. When it comes to single player skill/timing games (Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed), I'm rough.

Give it a little time.

We know you were once a great pong player Andy. :P

And later I came back to that familiar field of battle, a man where once a boy had stood.

Passing though the saloon doors of the local arcade in my old home town, youngsters looked up, wondering what the old timer could possibly want in this day and age of portable cd players, pagers, house music and Kylie Minogue fashion..

"I'm looking to play." I mentioned, a watchful eye on the rest as dust settled around my feet. From the back a shadow emerged.

"Wanna lay down some change, old man?" The boy, reflexes amped from years of jolt abuse by the looks of his acne, was cocky enough to give me an opening. Gesturing to the various arcades, as he casually flipped a quarter in the air, he stated

"Choose yer weapon, grandpa, cuz you're about to eat a bucket of humble pie."

His mistake.

Not mine.

"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkanoid" I said in a steel voice.

He never knew it was what I trained on for pong tournaments. The kid never saw it coming.

And another young gun bites the dust.

Depends on how long the break is. If it's only been a few months, most times I still have my skills. If it's been a year or more, fugaboutit.

Happened to me a long time ago when I stopped playing Halo: Reach then picked it up again after like 9 months of not playing at all.

First game I played in 9 months on Live, I had a -18 K/D spread ROFL. Second game, I had a -8 spread. Third game, a +2 spread, every single game after that I had a +10 at least spread. I was just ultra rusty.

Doesn't happen to me, but some games I played when I was very young like the first Mario Bros, is hard for me to do certain parts of. I was able to get very good at certain parts that you need good timing for, but the last time I remember trying seemed a bit harder because I would think more about it as I would do it. I could more easily stay concentrated when I was first playing it I guess.

Some games I played like Mirror's Edge seemed better for me the next time I came back. The first time I'm still new to the controls and everything, then when I come back it's like I meditated over it, so it's easier, and I'm more familiar with it too. Kind of like how in Morrowind you're supposed to rest to meditate on your skills, then level up. :teehee:

You have stage 1.

Stage 2, you only play rpgs.

Stage 3, only games made before the year 2000 are worth playing, and you start to see the intrinsic beauty in clunky menus.

Stage 4, time to open an account at the Codex forums.

I've had this happen before on all occasions except playing pokemon. I remember taking almost three or four months to beat one game. I just picked it up again, and it took me a day and a half to get almost all the badges....

I think people said it pretty well when you have to get used to controls on different games. Especially going from new FPS games to old FPS games. now THAT is weird.

Going from BadCompany 2 to CoD to halo then back down the chain throws me off slightly but its always a laugh.
I end up teabagging people when their still alive (sometimes shotting me) thinking I was using the knife button. :P

That sounds like a case of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DamnYouMuscleMemory. jRPGs on PSX have it worst: First X is cancel and O is confirm. Then in later games, they switch it so that X is confirm and O becomes cancel. Not exactly a sensible choice, but alright, we'll run with it. But then games like Digital Devil Saga switch the buttons around again, so X is confirm, ▲ becomes cancel, and O becomes auto-battle, and if you know Atlus games, you know that a single wrong button press can mean instant game over. More than once did I curse because I wanted to cancel a menu and accidentally let my characters kill themselves in auto-battle mode!

I used to be God-tier in Team Fortress 2 with the Sniper and Soldier and Demo (and Scout). I stopped playing for a LONG time. Now I can't hit anything with the Sniper, I shoot rockets waaaay off too often with the Soldier, and I can't even use stickies with the Demo. No matter how much I practice I can't get back to how awesome I was at sniping. I miss getting headshots.

Of course I'm using a different mouse/sensitivity but still, I'm used to this mouse by now. I should stop svcking already.

Back in my high-school days, when I played a lot more, I was a lot better, particularly at counter-strike. Nowadays, I'm still good but nowhere near where I used to be. The thing about counter-strike is that there are three elements to player-skill.

1. Intelligence, and 'how to move' = This is what always stays. It's an overall game sense, of when to flash, how to strafe, and other subtle things like that. This is permanent.
2. Reflexes, and aiming = This is what diminishes over time. Fortunately, against average or poor players a good 'game sense' can more for make up for it. (Hello flashbangs...)
3. Teamwork = Depends on the team, of course.

I've noticed that I am (feel) generally unstoppable for the first 5 minutes of an old game that I pick up. Then it goes downhill for a while and I either get sick of it and switch to a different game, or get sick of it and keep on playing.
Riveting tale, I know.

But it always takes me a while to push through that slough. I swear, it's like some games / game developers don't get it. FPS's are all pretty bland after a mechanics tweak. Adventure and RPG's have a pretty short play cycle for me...

Anyone have suggestions?
