Where's the love for Archery?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 5:43 pm

Why is it that i feel archery was left out when the "cool" was being passed around. A few things i feel need to be addressed with archery to bring them up to part with other playstyles.

1. Why are there no cool cut scenes for archery? I can play a melee class and have decapitations etc, but no long range cut scene of my enemy taking an arrow to the face. Why?

2. Why do i have to scavenge for arrows or better yet, why do i have to pickpocket a guard shooting a target and give him a deadric arrow to have the best arrows in the game? I cant believe there was no option to make arrows craftable in this game, ridiculous.

I also feel that perks should not be permanent. If i make the wrong choices for perks thats it, im screwed. There should be at least 3 times during the course of your game that you can choose to remove a perk to add it to a different tree. Or at least pay some gold to have a perk(s) removed.

I dont think ive asked for anything unreasonable and i hope some of these things can be fixed in a future expansion.

Totally agree about the finishers and the craftable arrows. Or at least to buy them from the dude who says he's a fletcher in Solitude.

I'd love to see a slo-mo shot of my arrow flying right into a draugr's face. I miss that stuff from VATS.

Totally agree about having some finishers for archers, feel a bit left out of that. As for perk reassignment I don't agree. I like the whole "you made your bed, now lie in it" mentality. Adds a bit more weight to my decisions about character development.

VATS would be utterly ridiculous for TES. It was amazing in Fallout, and I could do with some finishing Archery animations, but... no... :P

I would like to see this too. Some kind of arrow finishing move or even an arrow making an enemy stick to a wall. Still a great game though and I'm sure they have their reasons for not doing this.

I agree with the arrow crafting , altough modders will eventually (or perhaps already did ) implement it .
For the finishing moves , it would have given a " Fall Out " feel to archery , perhaps it would have been nice , but i'm fine without the finishing moves , i would have prefered that they allowed the use of the bow on horse

You do know you can save your game before picking perks... right?
As for the ranged finishers I suppose they wouldn't hurt - I don't miss them tho.

I don't mean Vats itself

Just the slow mo third person following the arrow from my bow across to the enemies face.

Not the pause the game...aim at head...fire

It would be cool to follow the arrow till he hits the enemy.

Don't the cut scenes with melee weapons happen when you make a critical strike? I guess there could be one for archery, but only for critical strikes.

Maybe we should be able to make our own arrows? It couldn't hurt. I asked myself, "what about the wood for the arrows?" Well, what about the wood for sword and axe handles? We already have the metals available. Maybe leather strips could be required too, for fastening the arrowhead to the arrow's shaft? I imagine you could get at least two dozen arrows out of one metal ingot.

No point. It was fun in VATS because of dismemberment, but it would get really boring really fast to simply see monsters getting hit by arrows over and over again. I'm happy with the way it is.

Some animations could be good. Maybe slow mos or maybe some cool ones like the arrow pinning enimies to walls (inside only obv), or lifting them off feet etc etc.

Giving the option to remove perks would not be good. You need to have some sense of importance when placing your perks. If you can just swap them around you would lose this

Making arrows would be very cool, and should have been in the game - there's really no good reason I can think of or have seen for it not to be there.

Death animations for arrows - well, this is sort of a "I feel left out" issue, but hey, why not? Just one more animation, after all.

As for changing perks - no. I hate that in games. Part of the replay-ability (is that a word?) of games for me is the idea of learning from my mistakes . . .being able to just change my character 80 or so hours into the game because i realize I took a perk I really didn't need 45 hours ago, well, feels cheap to me.

How can you not be satisfied with archery?

Its ridiculously OP'd in Skyrim, especially with the paralyze perk + enchantments and slow-mo.

An extra animation would be nice, but no biggie really, and you SHOULD have to scavenge your arrows after shooting them.

Crafting arrows, yes please.

Perks, no. Consequence for character mismanagement, and not saving frequently.

ehh I only agree with the craftable arrows idea. I dont think the finishers wouldn work well.
  • The melee ones take control of your player (attack type,# of attacks, and placement of attacks).
  • Using the arrow is too player controlled in my opinion and Im sure most people would get annoyed of the cut scene. ie "I didnt aim for that part of the body so why did the arrow shoot that spot"
  • An arrow shot isnt a guaranteed hit until its a hit
  • plus theres other variable such as (distance, AI, and area(for the pinning enemies idea)
  • Being an archer in my opinion takes a higher lvl of concentration (timing, aiming, etc)
Not saying that they are impossible I sure they are just wouldn as impressive as everyone thinks

I also dont agree with perk replacement u gotta live wit your choices or whats the point of making another character.

They need to overload us with weapons again

I would love to pin someone to a wall with a crossbow...

I would also love to be a vampire hunter, but what vampire hunter DOESN'T carry a crossbow? Even Bon Jovi had one! And [censored] Bon Jovi! I don't care what Mai'q said.

Animations are annoying anyways, always that loud annoying "crash" sound that makes no sense half the time. I thought it was heavy armor falling to the ground, but it happens when people are wearing clothes?

We need to be able to fletch arrows, there's even a guy in Solitude that's a fletcher. Why can he do it and not us??

The problem with cutscenes for arrows is that the game engine doesn't know if the enemy is going to move before the arrow hits. In the end you have to sacrifice "cool" for convenience. Does it svck? Yes. But if you have Xbox or PS3 it just svcks for you.

I really couldn't care less about the VATS-style arrow deaths as I like the deaths exactly as they are. But I agree that arrow crafting should be in. I'd also make a case for arrow enchanting, for (say) batches of five or ten arrows. But overall archery is just great, now I can one-shot giants...

That assumes you realize you made a mistake moments after picking the perk. What if you pick a perk and don't realize it was a mistake for hours?

I would like some finishers for archery as well as for magic.
Also, I can't understand why arrows can't be crafted. Ingot + wood + feather = 10 arrows.
