Which Build the Perfect PC is 2006 or 2010?

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 7:32 am

I plan on getting Building the Perfect PC. But I'm not sure which one to get. The 2006 version is really out of date but I don't know how out of date it is and the 2010 version costs 26 bucks. For fundamental reasons which one should I get?

Edit I meant to put better in the title but I forgot.

2010 http://www.amazon.com/Building-Perfect-Robert-Bruce-Thompson/dp/1449388248/ref=tmm_pap_title_0

Well, I haven't read either, but naturally the 2006 edition would be horribly out of date components wise. But there's no information in any computer building book that you couldn't find for free on the Internet.

I know it would be horribly out date component wise. But what I'm asking is if its good fundamentally because I just don't know how to assemble a computer.

Isn't there a cheaper magazine that can do the same.

You don't need to spend any money on a book. I built a PC without knowing how to do it via internet.

Is there a pdf file or site you could recommend me looking into?

Exactly. With the internet there really is no reason to buy a book nowadays. The components come with a manual most of the time, and those manuals are likely to be much more detailed then what you'd find online as well. And what ever happened to figuring things out for yourself? It doesn't even sound like you consider that an option.

Anyway, as for the actual question, the 2006 book would be outdated and may not exactly apply to all situations you may encounter, meanwhile the 2010 is almost guaranteed to be more helpful, if not for the sole reason of it being more recent.

The hardest part is actually picking out components, and this forum (or any other) can help you with that. Once you've got them there is really only one way they fit into the case, and the instruction booklets tell you how.

Yes, it's actually a pretty idiot-proof process. As long as you remember to touch as little of everything as possible and actually do what the manual says.

I'm not sure how I feel about it assuming that I have Windows. I do, but... I don't know, I like to have options is all.

Where does it assume you have windows? He mentions Linux but says that since it is a gaming machine it makes more sense for him to cover Windows.

That's the only OS Newegg sells.

Does he? The video title only mentions windows. I didn't actually watch it, so I guess that explains it.

Nami, I'm pretty sure that you know why that is. Most other OSs are free and OSX isn't allowed on non-Mac machines.

Yup, so you don't have options after all if you want to play games.

C'mon, if you can use Linux you think you'd need this video guide?

This is true. Although my father keeps trying to convince me to switch everything I do over to a Linux-based OS. I'm a gamer, dad, I don't need these complications.

Although I'm not sure exactly how good WINE has gotten.

I'd imagine that some are right out of the box, but since it's Linux you can just make it work.

Some GPU manufacturers don't release drivers for Linux or release poor drivers for Linux. I don't use Linux so I don't have any first hand experience but I have heard that Nvidia is much better if you are building a machine running Linux.

http://pcpowerplay.com.au/forums/showthread.php?139040-PCPP-PC-Build-Thread.-Suggested-builds. list is what I used to pick my components. Keep in mind that the prices listed are Australian, so if you're in North America you can pretty much halve them.

I have another question. Is it much cheaper to build a custom pc than it is to buy a pre made computer built by gateway, dell, lenovo, etc?

Yes, you also get better quality components. Though I can't give you an exact percentage if you really wanted to you could look into it yourself.

Yes, there's not really any comparing a prebuilt PC to one you built yourself. Building it yourself is absolutely of better quality for less money. Also, you actually learn something, and gain experience that helps with upgrading and troubleshooting your computer.

I have to say it depends on the budget and what is needed. The higher in budget you go, the better it is to build your own.

However, if you only have like $300 to spend and you need things like a Windows OS and monitor, you'll probably find a better deal with some cheap prebuilt. Although the better option here is to save some more money.

I'm halfway through the second video. I noticed that he touched the power switch with the end of a screwdriver. Is that safe for the pc. It looks like you could easily break something in the power switch.
