Which spells did you find most usefulpowerful?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 2:15 am

step 1.Dead Thrall chief ymarz and make his armor legendary to full 80% damage reduction
step 2. Dead thrall a volkihar vampire with orcish armor with the damage reduction above
step 3. Sit back like a boss and watch the [censored] happen
I found cheif ymarz although a great tank lacks in damage and bandit cheifs are alot better for damage on my character with a maxed out one handed tree my bandit cheif still did similar damage

Conjuration is a very powerful spell school and I would say all of the spells are useful there.
Illusion us great for thieves, assassins, or vampires invisibility works great with muffle. Frenzy in particular is a great spell to turn your foes against eachother.
Then restoration is great to use against the undead to cause them to flee, and its great to heal any class of character it can fit any build if you wish.
Alteration is good for mages that do not wear armor or if you wish to get out of a tight bind with the paralysis spells. It's also good for boosting your magical resistances.

It's almost 6 am where I live so I hope this little bit helps, goodnight.

As an assassin/theif I find detect life very useful, I can see the patrol routes of guards through walls without risking being seen so as soon as their back is turned I go and do some stabby stabby.

Invisibility is perhaps the most powerful spell in the game and makes the game very easy, means you can keep recasting and just run straight through a dungeon without any difficulty which isn't very fun, at least not to me anyway

As soon as you get the Impact perk for Destruction, you can stun-lock anything in the game with Firebolt or Ice Spike and easily kill it.

These spells feel a bit overpowered, so I've installed a mod that makes it a random chance to stagger instead of staggering enemies 100% of the time, and another mod that makes it so you can't stun lock dragons.

This. Seriously. Disappear, run off, and do whatever. Or disappear, kill an opponent, disappear again, kill another opponent, ect. It's not quite teleportation, but the bad guys sure won't know the difference.

I figured that alteration wouldn't get much love, however it has allot of power behind it. Paralysis is just an amazing spell. At the point I'm at the staff I enjoy using has a very low damage rate, however mixing it with paralyis and making my eponents stick to the lightning wall... Well that's just pure satisfaction. Not to mention when I do decide to put on that set of armor with the poisen once seen affect. I spent like an hour freezing goats and watching them just instantly die as I stood above their sitffened forms. I'm really glad I decied to do a pure mage playthrough. Although I did pull some sneakery every now and again. Qiet casting was an interesting perk...

Guys, thanks for the feedback. It's a lot of ideas to take in. The main decision I made is that I really need to explore all magicks.

I started this topic thinking, "You know, I bet there's just certain spells that are the killer apps, just spam those, put the rest in other skills."

However, you changed my mind, I'm thinking now, "Magic has so much utility, as there's much to learn and just to play with, but it all works."

I'm actually very cool with that. I'm glad I was mistaken. The difference is, listening to you guys, I now know it's really worth exploring.

From the start I wanted to pursue the full College questline anyway, so it makes sense for my char to master all schools, so I'm glad it fits.

My 1 regret - during the embassy mission, I really should have used Conjure Familiar more. Ah well, still got by, albeit with a few reloads.

If you find a scroll of Blizzard, don't be afraid to use it.

I had a lot of fun with those scrolls even though I was not high enough level to cast master spells.

I to am playing as a Breton Battlemage on expert and without a doubt all the targetted destruction spells are a must as well as the alteration armour spells and the summon atronach spells are a great help in a tight spot...

I also think the bound bow spell is great, especially with the new kill cams! ;)

My previous characters were Altmer mages played to level 70 & 55, respectively. I know lots of people swear by Conjuration and seem to enjoy it, but personally I found the summoner AI somewhat broken. My twin Dremora Lords would 'hang back', running back and forth behind me while Falmer stalked forward stealthily from the front; apparently they were waiting for full-on engagement with a target before they attacked? Not what I was expecting: seems to me the summoned daedra should venture forth and conquer, the whole point being to keep me from having to engage in the first place....

OTOH, I found maxing out Illusion, Destruction, Enchanting and Sneak together worked pretty well even though Destruction is still UP at high levels, simply because Illusion owns when it's fully perked. Illusion is an all-or-nothing skill, however, so unless I invested in all the substantive (not the cost-reduction) perks including Master of the Mind, I found the school didn't work so well. YMMV.

Exactly my thoughts on illusion being all or nothing. Well, maybe except for stealth builds only relying on calm casting and having expert cast for invisibilty.

Loved mixing illusion and alteration. Casting Frenzy then invisibility and let it play out it's self. Then in cases where Ive been spotted or ambushed, Calm, then summon a nice flaming familiar and pelt with Impacted Chain Lightning (:

Most of the illusion spells are extremely useful even to non-mage arch-types. With invisibility and muffle you can pretty much sneak attack anything at anytime, I didn't really use most of the mental illusion spells, I stuck with muffle and invisibility. From alteration I'd say the Paralysis spells by far, they work on almost everything and let you destroy it without it being able to resist, you can do it to groups with mass paralysis and your choice of AoE destruction spells or side stepping two-handed power attacks. On a pure mage I'm generally Alteration/Destruction with some minor perks in the rest, quiet casting and so on.

I'm coming back to Skyrim in anticipation for Dawnguard. I'm playing a new Breton Battlemage on Expert. I'm at level 10 at Winterhold College, experimenting.

I wanted to ask other veteran mages what they found to be the most useful or powerful spells. I was forming my own impressions, but what do you guys think?

My character basically only invested in 2 Perks so far, both in Destruction, Novice Casting and Dual Casting. I got lots of Perks to spend, but want to do so wisely.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Battlemage? Forget destruction, rely on one handed. One handed will do way more damage than destruction. Use alteration for magic protection, restoration for healing and enchanting for improving gear. Maybe dabble into some illusion, my mage is a master illusionist so he can just cast a spell and everyone in the area kills each other.

WTB this for the consoles

Apart from that, Conjuration...

Bound bow because I'm an vampire wood elf. Bow before me.
Also bound dual swords is quite nice too.
And Necromancy is pretty metal too.
Pretty much everything in Conjuration.
