Which Steam Game To Get?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 2:32 am

Hey guys,

I shall be getting a game off of Steam soon, but considering I literally know nothing about PC gaming, I'm going to need your help with the decision. I looked up some of the titles available and could make neither head nor tail of any of them. Only one I found interesting was Garry's Mod and that would be for $20 because I would have to get HL2 with it.

So now I'm wondering which one to get. Any suggestions?

Half-Life 1, 2, and its expansions. They aren't really long or too hard if you don't have that much time to sit down and pplay, have a lot of mods, and have a great story. For Garry's Mod, I would wait to play it for a while as in a new update that is not out yes adds somehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3gG0t39-pQ&feature=channel_video_title http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2uPUlBrikE&feature=relmfu

What type of game are you interested in? Most indie games are pretty cheap, and older PC games too.

I played 1 long ago, and have Orange Box for 360 which included HL2, Episode 1, and Episode 2. If I didn't already have them I would have bought them though.

Well, I mainly wanted something that first of all, wouldn't require too much skill, and was open ended. That's the reason Garry's Mod attracted me to begin with.

I don't know, what kind of games are you interested in? The original http://store.steampowered.com/app/6910/?snr=1_4_4__13 is 10 dollars. Same for the first http://store.steampowered.com/app/4500/?snr=1_5_9__13.

http://store.steampowered.com/browse/under10 is a full list of Steam games under 10 dollars. Magicka and Terraria are worth a look.

If you wait until end December there's going to be a big christmas sale. There may be some kind of Black Friday inspired sale that lasts a couple of days later this week.

If you are into shooters, TF2 is free and one of the most creative out there. It's a MUCH differet game forr PC than it was for Xbox, which had IIRC a few bugfixes and that was it.

Terraria is ~5e, it's cheap, fun, multiplayer and keeps you entertained for a decent amount of time. They're coming out with a big new update in only a week or so as well, with tons of new stuff. Portal is probably also under 10e, and that's an excellent game.

You can browse games by price category in the Steam store tab. There's an under 10e category with over 1000 games that you might want to check out, if you haven't done so already.

Garry's Mod is worth getting, but you can't really use it to it's full potential without all the Orange Box games.

I've played the first Deus Ex, STALKER looks interesting, but it's for $20. I've been hearing good things about Terraria, so I'll definitely look into that one more, Thanks. And thanks for the heads up on the sale. :)

TF2 is the only Steam game I have so far. :P

But yes, I agree, it's a vast improvement over the console version.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/105600/ is probably along the lines of what you are lookign for and there is going to be a huge update coming soon to make it even more expansive. Plenty of fun on your own but better with friends, especially if in the same room.

Here's a few games under $10 you may want to take a look at. They don't all fit your specifications, but they're all pretty good games.

It's 20? That's interesting. It's 10 euros here, and most of the time Europeans get screwed because usually $1=€1 is true on Steam.

Hurray for Eastern Europe devs. :P

Edit: But The Witcher 1 is twice as expensive in Europe as it is in America, for some reason. I take that back. :P

No wait, it's STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. Is that the original? If so, it's definitely $20.

Would KotoR be worth getting?

Edit: Now, I'm pretty torn between Vice City, Chaos Theory, and KotoR.

Get Terraria for sure.

If you have any money left over, get KotoR so you can see what an RPG actually feels like.

I suggest KOTOR 1. Maybe it's not that long for na RPG game (I have completed it two or three times, ~24hours each playthorugh) but you can usually complete quests in at least two ways - Light Side and Dark Side. Also, there are several "puzzles" in the game, where you really need to think for a moment. Dialogues are long and deep, ao are party NPCs. There's some customization, too - do you want to run with a big blaster and heavy armor, just to Force Push when enemies get near? Or be a Light Side guy, but make your own red lightsaber and shoot lightnings form your hand? The game also features several game endings (2 or 3 IIRC) but, to be honest, has rather small explorable areas, and the story's quite linear too. Ah, and the combat is qute interestin, it's a mix of realt time third person with turn-based commands. This may sound bad, but turns out nicely

Super Meat Boy is a really good game. It's available for Xbox too, but you should buy it if you don't have it already.

(Had to quote because I couldn't post a replay else)

If only you were a few weeks earlier, since it was the tenth anniversary of GTA 3 Steam had a deal on the complete GTA collection for about $15.

Grid is still what I consider to be the closest thing to a perfect racing game and its just $15 on Steam. The best Indie game I have ever played is Space Pirates and Zombies, its very open-ended, very easy to get into and is, again, only $15.

If you want Gmod, you won't need HL2, only a source engine game (which you have, TF2) to play.

If you're absolutely certain about that, then I guess I'll go for Gmod.
