Steed Stone.

+100 carry weight, not armor penalty on movement.

Chicks dig it too

Which ever one you feel matches your playstyle better. If you ever want to pick another one, you can do so at any time.

Depends on what kind of character you want to play as or what powers you'd like to have. For a warrior type I would choose Steed or Lord. For Mage, Atronach, then switch to Lord later on. Thief/Assassin I would choose Thief or Shadow until getting more powerful then switch out to something else.

Pick the one that helps with what you want to do the most... If you feel like working on smithing on your thief to make some better armor go take the warrior stone so you can level it quicker... If you feel a particular skill is falling behind your others that is of a different class take the one that corresponds to that skill to raise it quicker... Just pick what feels right for you and you can't go wrong...

I matched stones with the guild i was currently working for, later on i switched to Lovers stone as that boost all learning.

I will eventually use Lord stone (believe its called that) granting me improved defence against Magic and physical.

+1 for the Lovers Stone. Find it. Turn it on. Forget about it.

Correct. +50 to armor +25 to Magic Resistance.

I think this will come in handy later in the game. When all my "normal" skills have been maxed.

Atronach for mages, Lord for warriors, my choices anyway. Restoration perks take care of the -50% regeneration on Atronach before you get to your equipment bonuses, and which warrior wouldn't want more armour and a bonus against witchery.

90% of people are going to need to have their combat skills increase quicker than their non-combat skills in the early stages of their character.
So depending on your style of play I would match it up with the mage or fighter.
Even if your a theif in the early days you will end up relying on your combat skills, also the last thing you need is leveling your theif skills too high and then getting 1 hitted by a boss because it thinks your a higher level.

Later on, switching stones in recommended:

Lord Stone: 50 points of armor, 25% magic resistance. Most play styles can make use of this.
Steed Stone: More Carry Weight and No Armor Penalities. This useful for those with no investment in Stamina and/or Armor perks.
Atronarch Stone: 50% magic absorb, +50pts magic, -50% magic regen. Many Mages find this a good choice once they've invested enough that magic regen is a non-issue.
Shadow Stone: Invisibility for 60sec /day. Some Theives find this of use.

I play a hybrid character, so like many, find the Lord stone the most useful.
Atronarch is also a contender, for it's magic absorb, if you find going up against magic based opponents your hardest battles.
Magic resistance and Magic Absorb becomes quiet important later on in the game, since Magic for NPC does scale quiet well damage wise.

When you first see the 1st three Guardian Stones (Warrior/Mage/Thief) on your way to Riverwood, go with whatever best suits your style of gameplay. I chose Warrior, myself.
But when you finally find the Steed Stone, replace your initial stone power with that one, and stick with it. The Steed's +100 Carry Weight is one of the best benefits you can get from any of the Stones, IMO.

I'd like the +100 carry (i'm a hoarder :( ), but the Lover stone is my current pick. I find it suits my style.

I played this game for 40 hours before I ever activated a Stone. I just found the Standing Stones outside of Helgen last night and this character has more than 120 hours on him.

I think the Lady Stone is the one my character is operating under.

Right now my thief uses the Lady stone, my mage uses the Lord stone and my orc uses the Ritual stone, but I have swapped around according to what is needed. My mage went on an epic quest at about level 2 to find a particular shout in a dangerous location using the Shadow stone, that was fun.

Even my Mage ends up with the steed stone due to my hoarding nature.

Pretty much depends what appeals to you. Steed sounds cool, but with warrior you'll level quicker. All up to you. :)

The best stones IMO are:
  • The lord stone, +25% magic resist and +50 armor rating are very useful to every character.
  • Atronach stone, +50 magicka, 50% atronach effect (50% chance to absorb the spell against you completely) but you lose 50% regen rate. I always use this unless I use conjuration (the atronach effect cancels out conjure spells for some stupid reason).
  • Apprentice stone, could be useful, very risky though. +100% magicka regen but -100% magic resist.
You don't need to level quickly in this game to be honest.

Ritual Stone is SICK.

Steed Stone is more practical for most builds though.
