Which word sounds cooler?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:15 pm

I need help deciding what to call something in my New Vegas mod. I like the name Argonaut, but my friend really thinks its bad, and would rather have it Deimos. Which one should I call it?

It is a weapon created by the military, and this is the word that they codename the project/weapon they are making. It says 4 down there because this is the 4th weapon of its kind.

Some examples:

Argonaut-

The Argonaut Project
Project Argonaut
(The) Argonaut 4

Deimos-

The Deimos Project
Project Deimos
(The) Deimos 4

Thank you everyone for helping me with my stupid quandry. :P

EDIT: Added brief object description to help with decision.

The word 'Argonaut' makes me envision an Argonian jumping around in a spacesuit, for some reason...

I voted Argonaut...mainly because I lived on Argonaut Avenue when I was a little kid. :D

Argonaut sounds kinda cartoony and childish. I like Deimos much more.

From Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Deimos (Δε?μο?—"dread") was the personification of terror.

I'd go Deimos.

Thanks everyone. After reading this, discussing with some friends and of course, consulting a few google searches, I have decided to go with Deimos. (Said Dee-mos) Thanks for your input and votes!

Most people that read 'Deimos' are likely going to pronounce it "Die-mos" instead of "Dee-mos" just fyi. Might wanna tweak the spelling, if you want that effect.

I like Deimos. Argonaut seems like a "weak" word to me.

Argonaut is a much cooler word but Deimos sounds better in context.

If I tweak the spelling it kills its meaning and effect. People can read it however they like. My characters will say it several times, which should give them the correct pronounciation.

By the way, don't call anything "Project". It's far too overused to have any effect now.

I see your point, and I wanted to avoid it, but lack of creativity is an issue here. The current name would be 'Project Deimos'. Do you have any others suggestions? I would love to hear them, anyone?

Sorry but we are trying to avoid the use of the word or term 'Project'. I was going to call it Project Deimos. But I think I have a new idea. (See below)

D.E.I.M.O.S (make up something for the letters to stand for)

I really like this idea. After about 15 minutes of thinking about it and looking up synonyms and words and such, I have come up with the following.

The D.E.I.M.O.S.
Detected Entity Internal Molecular Obliteration System

It fits what the weapon does perfectly. It essentially 'evaporates' or 'dematerializes' living things. From the inside out. Think of it as a microwave, but instead of just exciting water molecules, it excites ANY molecules, essentially causing you to vibrate apart and break into each little molecule. So you pretty much evaporate over the course of a couple seconds. It may not be entirely realistic, but I don't think its too far out there. Unless someone seriously disagree's with this name in the next 10 minutes or so, and has a good reason, I think I will use it. Thanks DarthRavanger, and everyone else for your input. :D

Well by standard English rules (although there are pretty much none, since English is a [censored] language), 'ei' would be pronounced about the same as the letter i alone. Of course, since English doesn't follow its own rules 50% of the time, I shouldn't say "most people will probly read it this way". :P

But you forget the letter i alone can be pronounced several different ways, 'eye', 'ih', 'ee'. So really your saying something that can be said in many different ways, is normally pronounciated like something else that can be said in many ways. :P I hate the English language. <_< It's really unfortunate that it's becoming the standard language in the world. It's the hardest to learn, it isn't the largest, and it doesn't sound badass when you speak it. (Like Russian or many other Slovic languages)
